I do not rate my how-to self-help books by their writing style or voice or grammar or anything except whether their advice is solid, meaningful, and gives me more than I had when I started reading. I get engrossed in the meat of what he's saying and wouldn't see most flaws even if they were there. "Million Dollar Speaking" happens to have good writing, a believable, knowing voice. A good addition to the study of someone working to become better at their speaking and presentation. (Ariel I.)
The second half of the book was full of general lists and repeated information.
I am glad I bought it and got the insights I did but the whole book wasn't that amazing.
I knew that he started his client acquisition by writing and speaking, but I couldn't understand the "speaking" bit until I read this book. Knowing what I know about the general speaking circuit, or "key-note" speaking I couldn't figure out how he got straight into "key-note" speaking. It's really hard to get there to begin with and when you do you still have to have something else to offer.
From what I can gather Alan started as what I call a "trainer". Alan puts trainers and general speaking into the same category. He used what he labels as "speaking bureaus" and initially I thought he was talking purely places like "national speakers association" etc. But his initial work came from places that I have worked with such as "chamber of commerce" or "public administration". These are places that contract out work to trainers and where I started in addition to traditional client acquisition such as networking and cold calling. They don't have trainers internally but they do all the sales work for you as it's part of their membership base. You simply design the program and deliver it.
So once I realised that, I breathed a sigh of relief. I was on the right path to becoming a consultant. You see I started delivering training in-house for clients and because i'm good at that, they've become reliant on me for more and more until we started getting outside of single training pieces and into "projects".
This book more than anything was validation for me that training lead to consulting and overtime people saw me as an expert.
For the most part, this book is accurate in progressing from a "trainer" to a consultant. If you are just starting out in running your own solo business then the tips do work. You won't learn about how to write & deliver training in this book, if you want that I highly suggest investing in proper course.
Initially when I bought this book I was looking for how to write "key-note" speeches. I didn't get that but I ended up getting so much more.
1. Successfully increased my speaking fees by over 30%: If you feel like you're not making enough money as a speaker, or you struggle when negotiating your fees, Alan Weiss will give you the techniques and mindset necessary to overcome that problem. I'm earning more speaking income now than before I read this book, and so are my clients.
2. Landing speaking engagements more frequently: Alan will teach you how to get leaders to seek you out for speaking events. Don't waste your time chasing down leaders. If you know how to provide real value in your presentations, you can make them pursue you, which makes the negotiation, planning, and event process much more enjoyable.
3. Turning engagements into larger opportunities: Alan Weiss is a genius at helping you think bigger and see legitimate opportunities that most people miss. Myself and my clients have made thousands of extra dollars by learning to see a speaking engagement in a much larger context. Alan walks you step-by-step through this process.
I'm less concerned about the content of a book and more concerned about a book's ability to create real improvement for the reader. "Million Dollar Speaking" created tangible, significant results for me that you can't argue with. If you want to improve your business as a professional speaker, you'd be crazy not to invest a few bucks to get access to Alan Weiss' priceless advice.
