About the Author
Juliette Powell is a social media expert and Founder of The Gathering Think Tank, Inc. (http://www.thegatheringwebsite.com), an innovation forum that connects technology, media, entertainment, and business communities.
Her decade long career began as a teenager, working in live broadcast television and naturally expanded into interactive/new media content and formats, bolstered by a lifelong interest in people and community-building.
With her deep knowledge of the people and technologies at the forefront of social media, Powell, a serial entrepreneur, has gained a solid reputation for discovering the latest developments and distilling their social and business implications. Her consulting services have been employed by corporate, government, and new media organizations, including Red Bull, Mozilla, Microsoft, Compaq, Trump International, Nokia, the United Nations, the Department of Justice, Paltalk, and Rocketboom.
She has served as a guest speaker at MIT’s Innovation Forum, NYU’s Interactive Technology Program, and the Producer’s Guild of America’s New Media Council. She has also assisted in the production of the world-renowned Technology, Entertainment, and Design (TED) Conference. Powell asserts that social networking is nothing new. Savvy innovators always shake enough hands and kiss enough cheeks to have contacts to draw on when the need arises. But with new global digital media, the bridges leaders once built very slowly are now built overnight by people like you. When we rely on our connections, our connections' connections, and so on, we have literally millions of helpers at our fingertips.
By collating the experiences of a whole range of operaters, from Gary Vaynerchuk (wine connoisseur) to Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia founder) to Barack Obama (noted politician), Powell not only asserts that social networking can be profitable, she demonstrates how it has been done. Whether you want to make a million, get elected to office, or just open a few doors in your career, Powell's guidance will help you get it done.
Every paragraph in this book, seems like an orchestrated global recommendation compendium to start or improve your perception about Communities. But you can pick one of them to fire up your own ideas and inspiration in this topic, using all kind of existing tools (like Web 2.0) to new channels.

This is a slender book that can be read in a couple of hours, but it is packed full of useful information that will teach you how to use social media to make your business grow and thrive.
Ms. Powell highlights the importance of social networking. A social network is a Web platform where people can connect with one another. It is the online counterpart of the rolodex and card catalog wrapped into one, and it's becoming just as widely used. Social media offers new and exciting ways to communicate. Social networks aren't just about catching up, they are about staying in touch.
The author uses "Reed's Law" to illustrate the effectiveness of large social networks. Reed's Law suggests that every new person on a network doubles it's value. If you have a network of 25 business contacts, the amount of possible connections and subgroups within your group is an amazing 33 million.
The author provides numourous examples of how entrepreneurs have used social media platforms to build and grow their buisiness empires. There is plenty of practical information in this book to educate a newbie and enough details to sharpen the skills of a social media guru.
I really enjoyed the inspiration that this book presents by providing true stories of people who have worked hard and used social media networks to achieve success that truly blows my mind. I read this book and then I made a list of things that I want to implement to expand my social media networking efforts.
I recommend that you read this book and then use it as a reference tool in the future.
Online social networks are not a great substitute for face-to-face interactions, but they do provide tools which allow you to control the flow of information between you and the people in your network. For most businesses, social networks provide opportunities for improved communication (both internally and externally), improved dissemination of messages, and receiving feedback which allows the business to improve its products or services.
The book contains many stories about the ways in which various companies and individuals have benefitted from using social networking, but at the end of the book I was still wondering the extent to which the different tools would be useful in my own context. It seems difficult to make a sound cost/benefit analysis because the costs and benefits are difficult to define. Nonetheless, it is an interesting book, which I found easy to read.
