Families are complicated enough. Throw a little saliva into the mix to find out what your genetics reveal and wow, talk about a surprise. In this book, it wasn’t just Sela and Caroline who were shocked to find out that they were half-sisters. Their worlds just about implode. Caroline discovers that Sela exists and her serene life as a wife, mom, daughter, and now no longer a single child stirs up a tornado of emotions. Her parents are forced to reckon with their pasts as well. And that’s not all. Sela, faced with a life-threatening illness, simultaneously unearths a revealing piece of her family history.
A MILLION REASONS WHY is a gripping emotional tale of how digging for DNA might bring answers that we aren’t prepared to face. Strawser handles the subject and related topics with grace, presenting characters you feel compassion for. Expect tears.
But as they step into the unfamiliar realm of sisterhood, the roles will reverse in ways no one could have foreseen.
Caroline lives a full, happy life—thriving career, three feisty children, enviable marriage, and a close-knit extended family. She couldn’t have scripted it better. Except for one thing:
She’s about to discover her fundamental beliefs about them all are wrong.
Sela lives a life in shades of gray, suffering from irreversible kidney failure. Her marriage crumbled in the wake of her illness. Her beloved mother, always her closest friend, unexpectedly passed away. She refuses to be defined by her grief, but still, she worries what will happen to her two-year-old son if she doesn’t find a donor match in time.
She’s the only one who knows Caroline is her half sister and may also be her best hope for a future. But Sela’s world isn’t as clear-cut as it appears—and one misstep could destroy it all.
Alternating narrators tell us the story of two sisters who discover each other via a DNA test.
They carefully maneuver around each other via emails for a while, and then they meet. Finally. What will happen next?
As time passes, we learn more of their individual stories, including the love affair that created Sela. Additionally, we come to realize the secrets held by each of the parents and how they were able to hide everything for many years.
Soon there are unexpected twists that stir up all the emotions as we ride along with the characters. I thought I had it all figured out until the last-minute reveals stunned me. A Million Reasons Why was an unforgettable novel that earned 4.5 stars.
This book is an emotional, soul-searching ride that challenges our expectations. Caroline, her husband, Walt, her parents, and Sela seek to come to grips with the results of a DNA test that reveals that Caroline and Sela are half-sisters. When Sela collapses on a visit to Caroline and Walt, she is forced to reveal that she is gravely ill with kidney failure. Walt angrily accuses Sela of ingratiating herself with Caroline just to get a likely kidney donor.
Caroline may be Sela’s only lifeline, but Caroline’s parents have made it clear that they want nothing to do with Sela. And Walt seems convinced that Sela is an opportunist.
We like to think we’re good people who would instantly make the right, selfless decision. But life is seldom that straightforward. Right and wrong have many angles, some of them sharply prodding us in conflicting directions. Hidden facets of our lives come to light along the way. Strawser skillfully draws us into the entangled, questioning hearts of her characters and has us asking ourselves what we would really do in their circumstances.
While our throat continues to tighten as Sela’s condition deteriorates and she becomes increasingly withdrawn, suspense rises as Caroline unravels more family secrets and motivations.
The twists you’ll never see coming and a complete immersion into the full range of human emotions make this a must-read, unforgettable book.
There are no heroes in capes here, and no evil villains lurking around corners. These are imperfect, beautiful characters, just like us. And they are, as a teacher once said we all are, just walking each other home.
I will not soon forget this book!
