Put simply, Milton Friedman demonstrated in this interview, published in the February 1973 issue of Playboy, why he was so important then and why he remains so relevant today. Rarely has someone expressed in such clear, concise and easy to understand language, the reasons for the superiority of capitalism as an economic system. On issue after issue, he simply lays out the practicality behind the free market as the best option for maximizing both freedom and monetary benefits for citizenry operating under such a system.
Indeed, I was reminded of a statement attributable to, I believe, Harry Truman. When asked what book he would give a citizen of the Soviet Union to prove the superiority of the American system, his response was the Sears Roebuck catalogue! The proof is in the pudding, so they say. So it is with Friedman. This interview is short on esoteric theory, preferring instead to get to the practicality of people’s lives, with examples of how the free market is the best option for allowing people to get what they want.
Even when the interview touches on political topics of that time, such as Nixon’s price controls, Friedman’s responses still sound fresh. No doubt this is because the underlying issues, and alas, the underlying mentality advocating significant governmental intrusion into the marketplace, are still essentially the same. In fact, that interventionist mentality has taken the ascendency in current American society, with consequences Friedman could have stated with crystal clarity. This old essay could not be more timely.

I came across this interview in 2013 quite by accident and decided to read it while killing some time in a park in Healdsburg CA. I graduated from UW in the early 1970s with a bachelors in economics. The professor's at my school favored the Keynesian flavor of economics as opposed to what was then known as the (University of Chicago) "monetarist" flavor. I knew about Friedman but never really took much time to understand his ideas. Like a good wine, the interview has aged and now allows one to view Freedman's old and radical ideas within the context of our contemporary world. This interview allows both the right and left to share their common world view: they're right and the rest off the world is wrong. The real value is for the people in the middle who wish the extremist could be banished to an island where they could continue their argument for eternity while the rest of the world simply defines problems, fixes them and moves on to the next one.

The truth hurts. The government really does screw up everything it touches, and nothing more than well-intentioned war on poverty programs, which, in the end, not only harm the poor, but make the rich richer on the backs of them. Milton explains exactly how in this very provocative Q&A, and offers the tough road to solutions.

Great questions. Inspired answers from the Oracle. Common sense will set you against the tide of prevailing "wisdom" but you will be a man my son. ...

If you want to understand, how a why things work the way they do then this is a great intro to Friedman

While I don't agree with a lot of Milton Friedman's arguments, I admire his intellect and the rigor he applies to his thinking. The fly in the ointment is usually the assumption he makes about human rationality which leads to conclusions that work well in theory but not always in principle. Still, an enjoyable read.

It's too bad that things are worse now than when this was written. I'm terribly disturbed about the direction our country is taking. Milton Friedman had the right answers when this was written.

Friedman sharp as always.
It is a good way to start to know his ideas and leaves the reader wanting more.
