Quick and easy Idli maker!

I am not Indian, but was still able to make perfect Idli with this steamer! I tried them at an Indian restaurant and was hooked - but refused to pay $5 for 2 idli... so I got this steamer.

I added a little bit of water to the bottom
as one of the reviewers suggested - and I got perfect idli on my first try - in 4 minutes!

I’ve learned that different Idli mixes and/or adding seasonings/herbs/small pieces of meat or veggies means that they will take longer to steam (an extra 3 or 4 minutes), but still come out perfect! I love that it is so easy to use and clean. It’s also nice to not have to break out the pressure cooker and heat up the house with steam.

The first batch in the pics was plain, and the 2nd had a little MTR Spiced Chutney Powder added in - DELICIOUS!

It is a good product and saves a lot of time but it did not come with any instructions. Had to google it to understand how to use it. Idlis came out really dry 1st time. There are no indicators for water level.
The box it came in was also damaged and it felt like it wasn't the original box. Someone printed the images and logos and glued them on a plain white box.

Believe the key to make idlies soft here is
1) Ratio of rice flour, water and yogurt/curd
&
2) not to forget to pour some water in the base of this maker before putting it in microwave.

I had a sudden craving for idlis over the quarantine... But didn’t want to go through the hassle of making them with a steel cooker , not to mention the cleaning..

This does the job really well. Can make 12 idlis at a time, and they do turn out pretty well.
They are not a substitute for the softer idlis you can make with the traditional steel cooker, but I’ve methods online where you could probably add items to the batter to make it softer which you can explore to get the same output..

My process is I fill it with about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water at the bottom, and cook it for 6-7 minutes.. Sometimes the bottom layer tends to be a little undercooked, but it’s nothing another 2 mins in the oven won’t fix..

Give this one a shot, especially if you’re living with a max of 2 members in a household and don’t need to make idlis in bulk.

I purchased this product to make idlis at home that too usign microwave because I have electric coil and dont have any other idli cooker or aparatus to make it work on electric stove.
Once I bought and started using this I could get good idlis made in just 5 minutes and another couple of minutes too cool off and remove from the tray. So far its all good.
The problem actually starts from the very begining which I didnt notice. Actually the holes in the tray dont help, instead they allow the idli batter (even if it is think) to flow from top and all the way to bottom tray. So once idlis are cooked and ready to be taken out some part of the idli gets stuck to the holes and its difficult to get rid of. Further, its super difficult to clean it and I litterally had to use a sharp object like a tooth pick to remove the leftovers. This means after spending 7 minutes to make idlis I have to spend another 10-15 minutes to clean and do the dish washing, which means more work.
The whole idea of buying this was to make it easy, but it makes things difficult post cooking. I trusted Milton brand as Im familar with it since I was a kid, but now a bit disappointed. Im still using it by applying ghee to avoid idli stiking to holes and make it easy to remove, but its only a work around.
If the company or its representative is reading this I suggest you to please eliminate the post-cooking extra cleaning work - its not a worthwhile thing for working people. Please correct and bring a better product. Im not able to recommend this to my family and friends because of this drawback.

Microwave idlis can't get better than this

Great product especially if you want to make idlis in under 5 mins. Someone here commented on difficulty in cleaning. It isn't all that difficult. All you need to do is coat the plates with a tiny bit of oil or ghee (who doesn't like ghee on their idlis) and it comes out easily. Consistency of the batter and the temperature matters a lot. Also how much water you put in the container. I see that the three plates cook at different rates. That's the only issue. Other than that, quite happy.

I received my package today and I gave it a try, I usually make idlis in cooker so they come out softer, as many people say...
For this product, Keep in mind, to add enough water on the base of the box and if using pre idli mix, use equal proportion of yoghurt and water for softer idlis. They will be exactly like the ones in cooker.

Put 1 cup of water in the bottom, spray the trays with oil, put your batter and microwave on high for 4-6 minutes. Let it sit for 2 mins before opening. It does not come with any instructions but there are tons of Youtube videos and you can figure it out based on what you're making. Instructions would have been good along with a mark for how much water to fill but otherwise good product. Works! Makes idlis
