This is an excellent book. My 7 and 10 year old were captivated by it. It has some history and finance and life lessons. It is a great book for kids and adults. I have ordered more books in this series and can't wait to get them. I highly recommend it.

I found myself impressed with both the book and Mr. Hershey after reading this. The book presents the series of difficulties the man had to overcome, the opportunities he either grasped or squandered, the family which in turns supported him and at other times dragged him down and tried to keep him there.

Like many who try to start their own businesses, Hershey faced many failures before finding success and his story is one that could epitomize the 'American Dream' of pulling yourself up (again and again) to reach beyond the circumstances you began in to become something better. This is an inspiring story, but never trips the line into a farcical tale where every choice is golden and every person a hero. Everyone has faults and this book shows the real, deep-seated issues that caused continuous problems in Hershey's family, but the author never sensationalized them or blew the issues up into scandalous proportions.

In addition to the educational value of reading a biography about the life of Milton Hershey, you also learn a great deal about the economy of yesteryear - how a penny could be valuable and how easy it was to lose everything and slip into poverty. You see glimpses of how rare sugared treats were, especially to the poor, and how difficult it was to find a way to make a living.

Having said all that, I think my favorite part of this book was how the author balanced out the dueling ideas of practicality and dreams. Mr. Hershey had to have a measure of both to succeed and finding the right balance was probably his most difficult task, but in the end he accomplished it.

I'd highly recommend this book!

I ordered this book for a workshop I was going to give on the history of chocolate as well as the famous chocolatiers there have been over the years. Hershey was the best by far, with the children. But sadly due to the fact that the book came after the workshop was given I could not use it. Hope I can read it one of these days.

My daughter read this book for school. She is not an avid reader and really needs an interesting book to get her going. She found the story about his life very interesting and the writing was easy to read. She is in 6th grade and enjoyed the book.
