Satisfactory Coverage of Local Affairs
on May 2, 2013
The Journal Sentinel was a merger some years back of the high quality Milwaukee Journal and the lower-aiming morning Sentinel. The combination has never been as good as the Journal in its prime and tends toward gimmickry (self-congratulatory "gotcha:" pieces and the franchise "politifact" template) and frustratingly superficial and timid if not pandering coverage of important local issues. Notwithstanding these shortcomings, MJS has retained some excellent journalists, including pulitzer-prize winners (Dave Umhoefer, e.g.) and gutsy commentators (Eugene Kane, e.g.) on Milwaukee's persistent racial issues. Coverage of local sports and entertainment/culture is consistently good.
