Excellent TVP, for a good price.

I'm copying my review of Bob's Red Mill TVP here, because this is essentially the same product. Lately, I've been using Vegeta seasoning when I rehydrate it. It's good, but contains MSG, so be aware.

I love TVP. I use it at work all the time. Here are some tips on using it:

Rehydrate your TVP in a double or triple strength liquid, like bouillon or soup base with twice or triple the recommended amount added to the water.

Cover the TVP with the bouillon or soup mixture until it kind of sloshes around. It will absorb more liquid over time.

After the liquid has absorbed (usually 10 minutes or so) taste test it to see if the seasoning is to your liking. You can add more seasoning, or add more TVP depending on how strong it is.

Once it's at the right flavor, use your culinary skills to give it some kick. Add an egg and some breadcrumbs, and make TVP burgers or "meat"balls. Add some cumin, onion, garlic, and chili, thicken with a little starch, and you get TVP taco filling. The possibilities are endless!

BIG SECRET tip: Use a little sugar in your hydrating liquid if you are going to brown the TVP in any way, as in taco filling or patties. The sugar will help it brown (Google: Maillard Reaction) And if your dishes are tasting salty without tasting "savory" try adding a little nutritional yeast, or yeast extract.

My only complaint: this TVP is pale, like breadcrumbs. I like my TVP to have a nice dark color usually, but it all tastes the same, so not a big deal.

... have to believe what they say-- but I do like cooking with it

This is not about the nutritional value--I just have to believe what they say-- but I do like cooking with it. This will extend the meat you do have, it you are using it with meat, or it is fine by itself. You can use anything with it. I add it to my steel cut oatmeal to add protein, and I add it to soups for the same purpose. It has little or no taste, and seems to just absorb whatever it is mixed with.

I absolutely love this stuff. Like another said, there is a slightly sweet taste to it. I have gotten around that with sauteed onions and garlic! Of course, I am just beginning to learn how to use the stuff.
The first dish I made with TVP was Minestrone. It was fabulous!
The next dish was Vegan Tacos. This stuff makes the best Sloppy Joes too.
So, if you're an omnivore playing around with the idea of turning vegan, you might want to give TVP a try. Also - Barry Farms shipped my order FAST. I will continue to shop from them.

I've eaten many different versions of TVP and this is a decent one. It is slightly sweet but flavoring it helps negate that. I love that I had a shelf-stable product that I can quickly make a meal of. It's quite good for replacing hamburger in sloppy joes.
