The little-seen dark side of the Sixties.

First, this is not just a book about Mel Lyman. Every chapter covers a different person and cult.

There are things that exist in this world that are so ugly, grotesque and evil that no-one wants to hear about them or see them. David Lynch understands this and so do entomologists. An example not covered in this work is the San Francisco Jim Jones cult. A counterexample, an exemplar of evil that has been forced into mass consciousness, is the Shoah.

The "freedom", the jumping-off-a-cliff of the Sixties, was fueled not just by drugs but by the great American delusion that one can lift oneself from the ground by pulling on one's shoelaces.. if one believes. The reality is that one can become a guru, a leader, a veritable god if one ruthlessly exploits those who believe. This is the theme of the book.

A powerful, well-written and important work which deserves to be better known. It's a shame about the title - the title made it all but impossible to publicize and sell.

BTW, Amazon's software would not let me use the title of the book in the text of this review!

Seek the truth amidst the lies

Mel Lyman and family, drug mind/ cult and LSD gurus of the age, or were they? Though somewhat convoluted in presentation, it was an informative view of the times and why Lyman chose the course he did. If the reader can keep in mind truth and journalism are the strangest of bedfellows this book has more than a few interesting moments.

I enjoyed it. I didn't love it, but I came away feeling that I had learned something from this book, and for me, that's what it's all about; not to judge another or the times from which his philosophies sprung and flourished.

untrustworthy journalism, but a reflection of the times

The Lyman Family account is mostly fiction. In an anniversary book Rolling Stone magazine compiled a few years ago, the author relates how his desk was piled high with drugs so that he could finally start writing. What I find fascinating, however, is Mel Lyman's compassion for David Felton. It's the wise man humoring the fool. And if you read the whole article between the lines you can learn a lot. Rather than spend a lot on a beat-up old paperback, though, you could try microfilms of Rolling Stone at your library, I believe it's issues 99 and 100 or thereabouts for the original two-part report. Mel Lyman is one of the most fascinating men of the 20th Century.

Mel Lyman, Acid Fascist

The book accurately portrays Mel Lyman, an acid crazed fascist who indoctrinated needy, slutty young women and men into his acid cult via forced humiliation, physical abuse, and extremely large doses of LSD, and his crazed family. The book shows the insanity and violence of the entire clan, including their attempts to forcibly seize a radio station, their successful attempt to forcibly seize a newspaper, and the physical and mental abuse they specialized in. Mel Lyman fathered 12 children among 7 women before he reportedly died. SICK SICK SICK
