Across America, people are feeling squeezed, exhausted, and running faster and faster while falling farther behind. The economy continues to struggle, wars rage on, and every week brings news of another environmental disaster. Everything seems broken and people feel helpless to make a difference.
Despite this bleak outlook, there are strands of quiet hope and confidence. People are beginning to take action in a new way: they are slowing down, paying attention, and gaining an awareness of the inner resources at their disposal. This new way is based on the timeless and universal practice of mindfulness, the natural capabilities of our brains and minds, and the core American values of self-reliance, stick-to-it-iveness, and getting the job done. And it's manifesting in every sector of our society—it's helping sick people work with their pain and manage stress, school children improve their learning, veterans heal from trauma, and CEOs become more inclusive and effective leaders. All these benefits—and more—are supported by scientific research on mindfulness that is regularly reported by the mainstream media, such as ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.
In A Mindful Nation, Congressman Tim Ryan—an all-American guy from the heartland who is also a thoughtful, committed, mindful leader—takes this story about the benefits of mindfulness to the next level. He connects the dots between what's happening with mindfulness in the classrooms, hospitals, boardrooms, research labs, and army bases across the country by sharing his interactions with experts in education, defense, health care, criminal justice, and the environment. A Mindful Nation paints a picture of emerging solutions that both benefit the reader and address the societal difficulties we are facing.
Ryan's folksy, warm, and encouraging voice uplifts us and shows that there is something we can do right here and right now to help ourselves and our country. Both inspiring and pragmatic, A Mindful Nation shows how the benefits of mindfulness apply to the current challenges that affect each of us in our own lives and in our communities, and thus have implications for our society as a whole.
With a hard-nosed understanding of politics, government budgets, and what it takes to get something done, Ryan connects a practical approach—lead with the science, show the savings and show how this can help us educate our children to be competitive in the world arena—with a hopeful vision for how mindfulness can reinvigorate our core American values and transform and revitalize our communities.

However considering myself a "bit of a writer" also, I admittedly was a little skeptical when I first heard our Congressmen was writing a book, let alone one on mindfulness. Of course my understanding of mindfulness was limited to a vague notion it was some sort of meditative Yoga-like practice. Which I'm open to, as long as it's real, (more tangible than ethereal), and Zen is balanced by practicality. (I love a good "quiet time," but we all can't be sitting around burning incense and banging bells all day, though that might be a welcome departure from our constant full throttle lives.)
At any rate, A Mindful Nation is so much more than a Tai Chi primer, and should not be dismissed as one. It's easily more accessible (and obviously more current) than trying to digest Tao Te Ching, and like Robert Pirsig's Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, A Mindful Nation delivers many useable philosophies through the journey of its author to use supportive science in showing the benefits of mastering the art of balancing mind and body.
Of course I was curious and excited to support my friend, but I was also a bit apprehensive to read it. Mostly because of the nagging fear of what I would say to him if I didn't like it? Honestly I probably wouldn't have even picked up A Mindful Nation had it not been for knowing Tim. The very thought of any member of Congress (friend or not) telling us "how to think" considering the status of where I believe most of their heads are, was absurd to me. I can say with great sincerity though that I'm so glad I've read it as it has already helped in my own life.
Tim's aphorism's are not only understandable by those with limited prior knowledge (as I was), but A Mindful Nation is also timely with our county's current hyper-kinetic state of affairs. He backs up his urge for us all to practice a mindful lifestyle with both anecdotal and scientific evidence, and shows us that by listening to the connection between the mind and body we can cope and sometimes even free ourselves from the negative impacts of worrying.
Boiled down, the essence of A Mindful Nation is a movement back towards remembering why it's important to "stop and smell the roses," but more than that, it's a practice to help us become more self-aware and the applications in fields like education, health care, social services, politics, and the military are limitless.
By his own acknowledgment Tim has not invented anything new, but rather through his courage in writing this book, he's shined a light on mindfulness and encourages the citizens of this nation (and dare I say planet) to appreciate the present, and be active participants in their own lives by becoming aware and taking time on the small things so that the big things will come along.
Like he says in the book "mindfulness is not a silver bullet" to end all that ails our nation, but it may just be the shot in the arm we need. By making our minds, bodies, and spirits stronger individually, we as a whole become better prepared to both cope and evolve in the great expanse of our rapidly changing and sometimes overwhelming technologically advancing future.
This book opened my eyes, educated me, and has assisted me to recalibrate my own approach to life which has allowed me to reduce my over all stress levels. It's re-affirmed why I supported him way back when and why I still do now. The country would probably be a lot better off if all our members of Congress were as forward thinking. Like the Samurai employed Hagakure to guide them and mold their life philosophies, our current Congress and citizens of this great country could benefit by taking the time to explore A Mindful Nation.
No matter where you are in your life, you'll find yourself evaluating the way you manage relationships, starting with the relationship you have with yourself-- like a modern-day "Art of War." As a 20-something in a major metropolitan city, I'm reminded of my friends finishing their undergraduate and graduate studies who are asking "Now what?" in our current world of "not much." Their stresses couldn't be higher with the weight of competing in this troubling economy and proving their worth after, often times, accruing a sea of debt to earn that degree. For many, the pressure mounts and creates vices with the potential of pushing them further from their goals and risking their health, like alcoholism and smoking.
Even worse is the impact on the suicide rate during times of unemployment. Economists Richard Dunn of Texas A&M University and Timothy Classen of Loyola University Chicago recently conducted studies to pinpoint the effect joblessness had on suicide rates. They unsurprisingly concluded that "mass layoffs and long spells of unemployment specifically were associated with increased suicide risk." The research by Dunn and Classen tracks with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study published shortly after theirs about suicide rates from 1928 through 2007--i.e. from the Great Depression to the Great Recession. The study found the strongest association between business cycles and suicide among people in prime working ages, 25-64 years old.
Additionally, the study demonstrated that the overall suicide rate generally rose in recessions like the Great Depression (1929-1933), the end of the New Deal (1937-1938), the Oil Crisis (1973-1975), and the Double-Dip Recession (1980-1982) and fell in expansions like the WWII period (1939-1945) and the longest expansion period (1991-2001) in which the economy experienced fast growth and low unemployment.
Congressman Ryan lays out a common sense approach and plan to promote the education of what truly is, as the title states, a simple practice. He shows us that the tools for success in mindfulness lie within each of us, and if we're willing to dedicate a small amount of time to use those tools, the return on the investment is tremendous. Hopefully, the Mindfulness-based stress reduction education programs he lays out for children and the military will expand to as many Americans as possible. That way, as Congressman Ryan illustrates, future generations of young professionals and the rest of society can enjoy a comprehensive, fulfilling outlook on life and the productive spirit that defined why our parents, grandparents, and ancestors got up every morning--to leave this country better than they found it.

I decided to throw on the 3CD and wham, it is excellent. I learned so much. Each day after listening to a CD (and not #1, or #2), I found myself reflecting over many very key areas within my life.
Highly recommend this set, but skim through #1, and #2, not worth listening too. This man is too political for me, but his wisdom I can listen to only.
