This is a book for everyone - white-identified folk, black folk, and everyone in between.

Addressing racism from a grounded place is not an easy task. Conversations meant to be generative can be become heated quickly, and devolve without careful consideration to all the factors at play. Ruth King has gifted us with a gorgeous set of teachings, practices, invitations and considerations to contemplate and implement - and to simply, as the Buddha basically said, try out ("ehipassiko" - come and see for yourself). This is a book for everyone - white-identified folk, black folk, and everyone in between. "Racism is a heart disease", writes King, and it can be healed. May it be so; may all beings be happy.

Highly recommended for deep personal inquiry, important conversations and hopefully to make necessary change in our world. Ruth King offers wisdom, compassion and courage that prompt me to keep going into the difficult insights and relationships and behaviors. The book is well organized and works on many levels. It's what I've been looking for to address racism in the communities I'm a part of and to understand better what it means to be white. I'm looking forward to many conversations about this book!

A very different perspective on racial justice work

Ruth King adds a much needed voice to racial justice work, as she gifts us with her longtime experience as both a meditator and diversity trainer. I've read books and attended trainings related to undoing racism, but I haven't seen anyone put this mindfulness-based approach together in such a coherent and powerful way as what Ruth has done with this book.

I really appreciate how she approaches the topic from both an individual and systemic level, and as is befitting for a dharma teacher, how she does not see those two dimensions as separate from one another. The book is fully of practical guidance to apply these insights to your life as well as to groups that you are part of. I especially appreciate Ruth's description of RAGs -- Racial Affinity Groups.

This book will serve me (and many others) for a long time as a guide to skillful exploration of my own blindspots and unconscious racism, and as encouragement to stay engaged in racial justice efforts when the going gets rough.
