Editorial Reviews

Mindfulness is probably the most important practice we can ever undertake. In this wonderful book, Lani Muelrath explains, with compassion and clarity, how you can eat and live more mindfully--and thus how you can transform your life.
~ Dr. Melanie Joy, author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows and Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters.

In over 40 years of conducting clinical research, my colleagues and I have shown that a whole foods plant-based diet (naturally low in refined carbs and fat), along with meditation/yoga, exercise, and social support (love & intimacy) can reverse the progression of the most common chronic diseases.  The more illnesses we study, and the more underlying biological mechanisms we examine, the more reasons we have to explain why these lifestyle changes are so powerful and how quickly they may occur.  The Mindful Vegan eloquently describes why, and how.
~ Dean Ornish, M.D., Clinical Professor of Medicine, UCSF, Founder & President, Preventive Medicine Research Institute and author of six books, all bestsellers

Lani takes conscious living up a notch with this beautiful guide whose ripple effects extend far and wide. Long before you finish, you will have a much deeper connection to your own compassion - and a much broader understanding of what it means to live mindfully.
~ Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, bestselling author of The 30-Day Vegan Challenge and host of the Food for Thought podcast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly life-changing!
By IAWL on February 28, 2020
Wow. I am so impressed with this book. I purchased this book a month ago thinking that it might be a good way to get back into regular meditation practice. As someone who has been eating plant-based for several years (and struggling with some old habits and dieting mindsets) I am thrilled to say that this book has changed me in profound ways.

There are meditation descriptions in the book but for the most part - and for obvious reasons - the daily guided meditations are via AUDIO files that Lani provides for FREE via her website. The first bunch are available on Insight Timer (which I already had a subscription to) but the remaining are still available for free via her website. What I found helpful was to download all the files to my Dropbox app on my iPhone and then access them from there. They didn’t take up any space on my phone but I did eventually save copies from Dropbox to my laptop for safe keeping. You can also download them to your device if you want offline access.

Each day in the plan has a corresponding chapter in the book and guided meditation. Some of the meditations relate directly to the chapter’s theme while others (especially the longer sessions) include a simple reintroduction to the meditation format followed by silence. Some of my favorite chapters are Meditation on Bodily Sensations; Hindrances, Antidotes, and Helping Factors; Big Diet, Binges, and a Better Way; Becoming Vegan; Meditation on Emotions; RAIN; Higher Ground and Mindfully Navigating Conservations; Cultivating Kindness and Compassion; The Pure Joy of Eating; Cravings (I actually looked up and printed out all the articles/papers referenced in this chapter!); and Stress and Anxiety.

The entire book has been such a wonderful experience that I will be re-reading it this coming month while I continue adding to my daily meditation routine. I find that I am mindful of things throughout the day just as Lani discusses in the book, and I am aware of my knee-jerk reactions whether it pertains to food or emotions or a combination of both. Awareness with compassion and loving-kindness toward ourselves is the first step to making changes. While this book is geared toward vegans or the vegan-curious, the meditations and lessons can benefit anyone! Namaste 💗🙏
