Lani doesn't hesitate to take on the tough issues of cravings and out-of-control eating. These are rooted in deeper problems, which you must get to the root of to break free. You won't be successful for long in just white-knuckling your way through resisting that urge for a bag of cookies or chips.
For Lani, mindfulness is a tool to achieve your goals in life, and, just as important, an end in itself, leading to moments of pure joy and appreciation for life. Discover this power with her in The Mindful Vegan.
Lani took on and accepted the challenge of writing to inspire inner transformation to her readers to create a greater sense of awareness and passion. A difficult challenge for any great writer, and Lani hit a home run so to speak!
The book is great! It tells you an overview so the reader can anticipate the more detailed ideas that follow. Then the reader grows, practices techniques and thus becomes more mindful, all while learning a deeper understanding of veganism.
Other writers in either the "mindfulness" genre or the "vegan" genre have never took the time to link these two important ideas. For example Eckhart Tolle has helped create more awareness for many people, but he lacks the basic understanding of holistic non-violence towards animals. Other animal right writers give great explanations of what it means not to use animals as resources, but never inspire the reader with empowering them with mindful techniques and the importance of taking care of one's self.
After her other great book, A Plant Base Journey, I felt she covered so much in that book that there wouldn't be room for any new information. I was wrong. There was so much great information that I would encourage people to read this book first THEN read her previous book.
I took this book to a vegan event and put it on display for people to look at. Numerous people came up to it, made comments about how wonderful the cover was then proceeded to spend a long time thumbing through the book and learning new things. I could feel the positive energy that the people gave off as they read these words that were inspiring them to have an inner transformation!
After reading this, I look forward to her next book, what ever it may be, and what ever two large ideas she finds the nexus for! As a person trying to become more of aware of this world and to become a better person for the world, it is crucial that we find where powerful ideas overlap!
Being a mindful vegan, impacts all aspects of your health and the health of our planet. The very best part is the lives saved when becoming a mindful vegan.
In spite of healthy eating and regular exercise, there was something missing. I've known for awhile that I needed to do some "Internal work" to live my best, most joyful life. Meditation practice has always been difficult for me, and I've never known quite how to approach it. Lani's book makes it so accessible, including a 30 day plan to train ourselves in mindfulness...just a little more each day as we grow in this practice. With her expert guidance we can learn to navigate "disquieting states" (anxiety, stress, restlessness, boredom, fear, etc.) and ease them without reaching for unnecessary or unhealthy food as comfort. Mindfulness meditation is an amazing tool, whether you are struggling with constantly trying to resist temptations to overeat, are prone to anxiety, or just want to live your best life.
On page 16 of the book, Lani notes that mindfulness meditation can lead to stress reduction, emotion regulation, and increased well-being, and so many other benefits! To name a few..."increase self awareness, lessen harmful patterns of feeling, thought, and reactivity, enhance self-confidence, patience, and compassion, experience more calm, develop a greater capacity for dealing with adverse situations, reduce anxiety and depression, quiet intrusive thoughts, improve focus, enhance creativity and problem-solving, improve immune function, become more resilient, reduce insomnia, and better manage pain." Each chapter is filled with amazing information, tips, and "Mindful Moments" for introspection. I'm so excited to continue on this path. Whether you are just thinking about veganism or already there, there is an abundance of support for you in The Mindful Vegan to provide you with sustenance for the journey.
Lani's message is about creating more self-awareness, balance, thoughtfulness, kindness, compassion, peace, health, vitality, and joy in our lives, bringing healing to all beings and our world. This book is a true gift! I have never come across a book like this and highly recommend it. Let the transformation begin!
