Editorial Reviews

Review

Debra Burdick has written a gem of a book on mindfulness. As a guide for clinicians, the book has everything: no-nonsense, clear style; plenty of background info; tie-ins with research; excellent illustrations; and plenty of original experiential tools for introducing mindfulness and leveraging motivation and compliance. This is the kind of resource on mindfulness that you are not just going to skim through: you are going to copy and dog-ear and share this book with your colleagues and your clients. This just might be the last guide to teaching mindfulness that you buy. --Pavel Somov, Ph.D., author of Present Perfect, Reinventing the Meal and Anger Management Jumpstart

Debra's work has changed my life, as well as lives of my patients. As a board certified sleep specialist and neurologist, I began to struggle when I had patients with stress induced symptoms. Initially coming out of medical school, I tried to help with what I was taught to use which is medications. It was very rewarding when it worked. But it was disheartening when it didn't, and even more disappointing when the patient would come back a few times and complain that all docs do is increase or change medications.

Like many other physicians, I don't live in an academic university setting and there is a scarcity in the number of psychologist and counselors for the population of stress induced symptoms that we see. And then I took a full day webinar on the Mindfulness took kit by Deb The Brain Lady. Within a month I was changing lives. I became more efficient in helping my clients achieve sleep, treat pain, and reduce stress. As I reviewed her skills workbook I was able to put together information to help my patients better.

After conducting her techniques with my clients, I would say 90% of them would comment they felt more relaxed. The other 10% would say they felt different, but didn't know how they felt. These were high stressed clients that had forgotten how it is to feel relaxed, because when I would them directly ask them if they felt relaxed it is as a light bulb came up and they would say "yes".

The Brain Lady's Mindfulness Skills Work Book will allow one to learn the basics of Mindfulness for an introduction, as well as target specific symptoms and challenges the patients are having. I encourage every clinician who wants to change lives to make yourself familiar with the work.

Awesome for supporting clients experiencing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, adhd, axis 2 struggles, dual diagnosis counseling and as a start with depression. I bring this book into session, and most clients really like it. Very popular. As with any guide there is a certain amount of tailoring activities to each individual, and making tweaks here and there, overall a really impressive guide and base to mindfulness work. I like to use this a lot in support of CBT work and practice, as an introduction to therapy, as well as an ongoing support.

After each exercise I use client feedback, during process time, to make minor improvements to certain exercises that need a tweak here and there. It's worth it to purchase.the paperback, due to the necessity of making copies and handouts for colleagues and clients alike. Great book to share with other therapists in the workplace too!!

This book gives clear instructions for introducing and practicing a mindfulness program with others. It even offers ways to simply explain how mindfulness affects the brain. Research shows that many people with stress and/or mental health problems can benefit from midfulness execises. This book helps clinicians offer the opportunity to experience mindfulness to others and encourages clinicians to practice their own program of mindfulness regularly.

It could not serve the purpose for which it was bought. I am a therapist and expected to be able to print handouts for my clients. I searched all over the Amazon web site and found no way to do what I wanted. the author was kind enough to send me a pdf copy. Now I am happy with her book. I recommend it. This type of workbook should come with a pdf copy if bought on kindle.

This book is a treasure of information that is clearly written, relevant, and insightful. It is invaluable for anyone who needs the "know how" to introduce and use mindfulness in their treatment with their clients. It includes sections on research findings and how to apply mindfulness techniques to specific psychiatric disorders, medical illness, ADHD, and sleep disorders. It covers a wide range of mindfulness skills and is extremely comprehensive. My favorite sections are Present Moment Awareness and Mindfulness of Thoughts. The Mindfulness of Relationship section is excellent and has a thoughtful description of the importance of "feeling felt by others." This book would be helpful for therapists who want to enhance their own life. The many handouts with step-by-step instructions on implementing various mindfulness skills are valuable aids for the clinician to use directly with their client.

I am firmly convinced of the value of mindfulness for treatment of a variety of mental disorders--from anxiety to substance abuse. But, I felt lost as to how to implement these techniques. This book has been the perfect solution! I have been using exercise from it with a very diverse set of clients -- from a high-school girl with generalized anxiety & social anxiety to a middle-aged man in early recovery from substance abuse who is struggling with multiple losses due to his previous lifestyle. All clients have fully engaged in the exercises and, most importantly, reported that they have been helping. This is a great basic resource!

The content of the "workbook" is fine, but the construction of the book itself makes it utterly impossible to actually photocopy the so-called handouts. Why isn't this spiral bound? Or at least laid in such a way that the content you're trying to photocopy for handouts doesn't go all the way to the spine of the book? Short of using a razor to cut the pages out of the book to make decent copies, there is no work-around to solve this problem. What utter & absolute frustration!
