For fans of video games. The main character, Felix, is clearly immersed in a video game world and the storyline follows his quest to regain his memories and fight monsters. Along the way he encounters a host of colourful characters, some with special powers, others just ordinary folk, many of whom are willing to help him on his journey.
‘Mind’s Journey’ is written in the first person, a bold move by the author but a point-of-view which I personally find to be very limiting as a reader. Add to that the fact that Felix has no idea who he is or even how to interact with people in the most simple of situations, and at times I found my frustration with his inabilities almost became unbearable. I would have liked it if the author had provided more clues, and sooner, as to why the character is so utterly helpless for much of the book.
‘Mind’s Journey’ will most appeal to RPG video game players. There are some intriguing moments and characters, with a regular sprinkling of action, and I was curious to see how the author would resolve the challenges that Felix faces. However I found many of the characters were not as well rounded as I would have liked, a function perhaps of the video game format and first person point-of-view, nor are their actions always clearly explained or readily understandable.
This appears to be a first book in a new series, so I look forward to seeing where the author takes the story in book two.
