About the Author

Barbara Oakley is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and Ramón y Cajal Distinguished Scholar of Global Digital Learning at McMaster University. Her research involves bioengineering with an emphasis on neuroscience and cognitive psychology. Dr. Oakley teaches two massive open online courses (MOOCs), "Learning How to Learn" (the world’s most popular course) and “Mindshift” (based on this book), alongside legendary neuroscientist Terrence Sejnowski. Dr. Oakley has received many awards for her teaching, including the American Society of Engineering Education's Chester F. Carlson Award for technical innovation in education and the National Science Foundation New Century Scholar Award.

Buy A Mind For Numbers instead of this book.

I bought this book because I had previously read Oakley's "A Mind For Numbers" (AMFN) and absolutely loved it. This book is her second and it is weak compared to AMFN. This book is chock full of anecdotes. Long, repetitive anecdotes. AMFN is succinct and full of very constructive steps. Mindshift has very few useful nuggets. It is more like a cheerleader urging you on to make changes. Buy "A Mind For Numbers" and borrow this one from the library if you must read it.

What is a mindshift? Barbara Oakley provides this definition: “A “mindshift” is a deep change in life that occurs thanks to learning. In the book, Oakley describes a framework of tools that can be applied to best take advantage of learning. In each case, she uses provides a vignette of how a real person faced a life difficulty, how they solved it, and why it matters. One great part of this is the diverse group of individuals, women and man of all ages, from across the globe. Oakley discusses a variety of topics, asks the reader to work through a series of questions, and provides tools and resources to enable a person to answer these questions. Here are a sample of the topics and questions that Mindshift considers:

Broaden Your Passion >>“What could you do or be if you decided to instead broaden your passion and tried to accomplish something that demanded the most from you? What skills and knowledge could you bring with you from your past that could serve you as you really challenge yourself?”

I really enjoyed Mindshift, but it is not a “one-shot”, quick-read book that provides all the answers. It’s a book that can help someone making a life change to do so in a coherent manner. Oakley’s shares her own failures and successes; along with others in a global community. Mindshift provides a framework for a learner’s next logical step: How to apply what you learn when making a shift in your life. In addition, Oakley provides valuable insights into maximizing learning using new tools, such as MOOCs. (She also provides a fascinating look behind the scenes of making a MOOC). Finally, I appreciated the thorough job of providing references that support the facts on learning that are provided. If you are considering a life or career change, I recommend Mindshift as a very useful guide.

Useful guide for young and old, perpetual students

Many of the things Oakley writes about were becoming known a few decades ago, when the chapters in my high school psychology textbook on "how to study better" got me so excited that I chose psychology for my career. But Oakley is a gifted teacher and cites some pretty useful and new neuroscience, and lays out a very organized program for developing one's study skills. I've bought the book for my granddaughter, now entering high school, and she was excited. Highly recommended.

the potential and reality of learning a new way of life

Prof. Oakley helps us explore what it means to make a major shift in our thinking resulting from our choices, and learning to progress in this new way. She presents a variety of stories about such mindshifts relating to people in diverse settings in life. This provides a good perspective on how we may come to choose such an extreme path that can require significant learning. It also allows us to see what points of view motivate people to make such changes. We have to consider a number of significant factors. She provides questions to help us explore some of these factors, assuming we are contemplating change that will confront us with a steep learning curve. She provides an opportunity to explore that is based partly on the stories of people's lives she presents. I have made several mindshifts in the course of my life. I think her explorations would have assisted me in getting a better perspective and anticipate some of the problems. When we make these mindshifts, we are challenging ourselves, and perhaps also challenging assumptions we make about life that need to be questioned. I recommend her book on this basis: To help reflect on the potential and the reality of a mindshift.

The economy is changing rapidly. Many fear losing their jobs to automation. This fear can be overcome with mindset, a mindset that new skills can mastered along with new knowledge. The
author changed from being a linguist to being an engineer mastering mathematics a skill she did not think she any aptitude for. There are many examples of of people who acquired the needed knowledge and skills to successfully pursue new careers. The author also provides information on the resources available to assist in new pursuits.

A good read if you're considering a career change

A great companion to Mindshift, the MOOC. Also a continuation of the MOOC Learning How to Learn. If you've taken either of Oakley's online courses, you know exactly what to expect with this.

It covers exactly the same material as the MOOC with the same title, namely: inspiration for lifelong learning, gentle nudges to go outside mental comfort zones, a huge variety of tips for learning, and just enough neuroscience to provide scientific support for the material.

The book does contain additional examples and material that was not covered in the MOOC and some of these were the most interesting to me personally.
