Great Overview of Cognitive Science

This book was recommended to me by a cognitive scientist researcher at my university as the single best thing I could read to obtain an up-to-date overview of what's going on in cognitive science. The book lived up to this promise. I found it an excellent, scientifically and philosophically informed, treatment of this topic.

Great Book, But No Introduction

First, let me say, I took so much from this book. I'm a cognitive science major myself and there were ideas in this book that hadn't ever come to my attention. I would like to say, however, that the chapter on connectionism didn't do the topic justice. Also, the book's chapters on the whole tend to mesh together to build up to the author's personal philosophical paradigm, extended mind hypothesis and largely embodied cognition (which is what most cognitive scientists believe). I find that in doing this, however, the reader misses out on the history and therefore context that these competing paradigms share.

Second, although this is a great book, I'm not sure I could recommend it to a layman audience. For that reason (not being as the title says, an introduction) I deducted one star from the review. However, if there's any philosophers of the mind, psychologists, biologists, or just curious people out there, I'd recommend this book to read for cognitive science (also, it helps a lot, for undergrad cog sci majors to give this a read before entering into your first cogs class).

Great, but not easily accessible for laymen.

I am a student of cognitive science and I am well familiar with the basic problems and issues in cognitive science. I found this book as a great overview over the current approaches to the study of mind and cognition.

What I liked about this book is the broader treatment of topics through the discussion sections. It presents a review of the criticisms and shortcomings in a scholarly and vivid narrative. Furthermore, it presents suggested readings following the discussions which I find very useful for researchers and scientists who find themselves interested in certain segment of the book.

Other thing I liked about the book is that the author presents his own view in the last chapter of the book after reviewing the other views in the preceding chapters. So the author has his own research program but I don't think it affected or manipulated the presentation of other research programs.

Though the title suggests that it is an introductory text and thus accessible to laymen, I don't believe so. It not a matter of hardness, but it just takes time to follow up. But if you are already familiar with the topic and read few books on mind or brain, I think it would be an accessible and thought-provoking text.

I found this a nice summary, overview

Andy Clark tackles a lot of the most important theoretical concepts I have slowly been piecing together in a series of readings and lectures that have spanned my last few years, and places them in the context of a narrative about how we should think about the mind. Clark begins with the deep philosophical question of what the mind is and how we seem to have them, and then explore symbolic computation, neural nets, dynamic systems, and embodied cognition as presenting various responses to the problems. Chapters are quick, but I can imagine finding the shortness a bit difficult if all the ideas were new to me. As it was, having some introduction to the material already, I found this a nice summary, overview, and framework from which to view the field. Clark is also a very engaging writer, who is good about getting quickly to the core of an idea and what makes it interesting.
