Mindy came out with her first CD on Vanguard Records back in 04. Seems like such a long time ago. I was crazy about her music, when I heard that CD. Mindy was a songwriter in Nashville working for a songwriting company, where she had access to recording studios to record her demoes to give out to Producers and however that company worked. Mindy was originally from Long Island,New York. But she moved to Knoxville, Tennessee because of her Dad's job. In Knoxville, she became interested in playing guitar and singing and then in songwriting.

Smith moved to Nashville to be closer to where her dreams were, singing and writing songs. So,she continued to write and record her music. She had the opportunity to record "Jolene" on a compiliation CD and then She started singing around Nashville, and She got together with Steve Buckingham and made her debut CD "One Moment More", which was to me ,an aural masterpiece with the beauty of her vocals and lyrics and the edge of hot electric guitars making her not unlike Lucinda Williams. Her voice had that ache in it from losing her mom, That is what "One Moment More" is all about. Vanguard records released her first four CDs and then Mindy kinda vanished.

I heard about this new Cd on her own label and had to hear it, because her last CD on Vanguard ended up not so good in my opinion. It was called "Stupid Love" and it was more like a pop record, the alt/country trappings were gone. In fact, there was so much distortion on the first 2 songs, you could not listen to them. There was some good songs on the CD , but the magic from her first three Cds was gone.

Well, with a new label and publicist, and a great recording, Mindy Smith is back, singing better than ever, this CD reminds me alot of her first CD.

Mindy Smith's just released self titled album is another example of how talented she really is. Her hauntingly beautiful voice soars though out the 11 tracks. It's also another album that makes it hard to categorize this wonderful singer/songwriter. She sings her way from one genre to another with grace and style. Mindy is on a very short list of artists that I will purchase without hearing first. My only complaint is that the music runs out long before I am done listening. A few more songs would always be welcomed.

When country singer Mindy Smith arrived on the scene in late 2003, it was like she came out of nowhere. The alt-country chanteuse seemed like an anomaly of sorts. She was a country artist from Long Island, New York- a place that's more well known for hip hop (De La Soul, Eric B. & Rakim, Public Enemy, EPMD). She made her debut on the Dolly Parton tribute compilation "Just Because I'm A Woman", with her remake of "Jolene" being the first single from the project. A few months later, she released her Vanguard Records debut "One Moment More", which spawned her signature songs "Come To Jesus" and the somber title track about her deceased mother. She reunited with the producer Steve Buckingham (Melissa Manchester, Linda Ronstadt) for her sophomore effort "Long Island Shores". After the release of a Christmas album in 2007, she returned with new music on 2009's "Stupid Love". The project was a left field turn for Mindy, as she worked with new producers as well as experimented with electronic sounds. As great as all of her recordings were, it seemed as if her label gave her less support for each time she wanted to push the envelope. After a seven year association with Vanguard, Mindy parted ways and went to the indie label Giant Leap Records for her new album- the self-titled "Mindy Smith".

On this new album, Mindy's back to the sound that recalls the spirit of her debut. On the production front, she produces her new album with Jason Lehning (who also co-produced Mat Kearney's 2011 album "Young Love"). She starts the record off with the inspirational bluegrass song "Closer". She longs to find love again on the ballad "Take Me Back" and goes out for a good time with her significant other on "Pretending The Stars".

I enjoy Mindy. One Moment More is one of my favorite albums, full of surprises and lyrical goodness (can't ever get over the Train Song). Her Christmas album is refreshingly original and satisfying.
This album sounds great. "Closer" has a nice mainstream feel and message to it. I am not sure I buy her voice channeling the blues in songs like "Don't Mind Me"; she sounds more comfortable in the country swing of "Tin Can" and the gentle waltzes that populate this album

Where she always shines for me is in her vocal honesty. Her christianity does very little for me, and slightly gets in the way except the genuine heart that emits from something like "Everything Here Will Be Fine." I dare you to not to sob with the last choking line of that song. Heartbreaking.
"If I" is just pure folky smushy Mindy love; there is an ache in her voice that connects the lonely and lovelorn.

Mindy is dandy. She's a fine songwriter and a unique vocalist. The production on this album reminds me of Spector's "Wall of Sound", only this is more like a Curtain of Sound, or maybe a Waterfall of Sound. Lush acoustic guitar backings really create a soft soundscape. When you add Mindy's flute-like voice on top of these really tasty tunes, it's easy to put this on and listen from start to finish. What is even more impressive is that my teenagers like it. I heard a comment from the back seat: "I really like this. It soothes my bones." Can't do better than that!
