It reads the ground very well due to using multiple frequencies at the same time and feeds back so much information on the LCD screen compared to 99% of other detectors that it is simply the best choice for pasture where contamination is often high and good targets are deep - as the CTX ignores coke that gives it a massive advantage over single frequency machines like the XP deus as there are very few wasted digs.
Response speed is not lightning fast like it tends to be on single frequency machines but the amount of information fed back, variability of tones and ability to discriminate between two different targets under the coil at the same time (using the 'target trace' feature) makes it an incredibly powerful tool in the search for coins and relics among a nation of trash targets.
After hunting with an Etrac for many years I definitely welcome the better balance and improved features of the CTX but ultimately it isn't miles better than the etrac - let me explain similarities / differences and pros / cons:
Waterproof, well balanced and excellent at reading the ground.
Very nice full colour LCD screen - much nicer than Etrac screen and also includes a clock which is handy.
FBS2 technology allows for multiple targets to be read and shown on screen at one time allowing the user to see a visual representation of good / bad targets.
GPS is a great feature as good finds can be recorded which allows the user to revisit that exact spot (within a meter or so) for future hunts.
Li-ion battery lasts a good 20 hours and charges quickly.
Wireless system works well (but is a bit clunky compared to XP deus wireless system).
Both the stock coil and 17" coil work very well and even when using the 17" coil the machine does not feel too coil heavy as it would on an Etrac (I use a 18" SEF coil on the Etrac). For long hunts it is worth investing in a Minelab harness and bungee to take most of the weight.
Possibly the best metal detector available for pasture and versatile enough to be great on ploughed land an beaches too.
Improved response speed compared to Etrac which means you don't have to hunt quite so 'Slow and Low'.
Anyone who is well familiar with an Etrac will find the CTX 3030 easy to set up and use effectively as the menus and screen lay out are very similar.
At the best part of £2000 it is expensive compared to the competition.
Wireless system is not a true wireless set up since wired headphones are plugged into a receiver unit which is worn by the user - surely that could be made much better considering the XP Deus has a near perfect wireless system and came out well before the CTX 3030.
Performance is only slightly better than the Minelab Etrac which can be picked up for close to half the price.
Although the audio is very good the sounds of copper and silver are not as 'sweet' or as exciting as the Etrac - I don't know why Minelab changed the audio for the CTX as it was perfect on the Etrac.
If you are looking for the best possible detector for pasture hunting and also want something which is also at the top of its game for ploughed land, beaches and you plan to use it in shallow water then this is definitely the detector for you - 100% (assuming that cost is no barrier).
However.....if you desire a comparable performance on pasture and ploughed land, aren't bothered about the GPS feature and won't be using it under water (and the cost of detector is a deciding factor) then the Etrac may well be a better choice. Both will punch deep, read the ground well, ignore coke and an after market Li-ion Etrac battery will give it similar run time between charges.
I have both detectors and although I prefer to use the CTX 3030 due to the better balance and the 17" CTX coil being way lighter than my 18" SEF Etrac coil I am confident that the CTX will not find much more than the Etrac - it may be 5% - 10% better on deep targets but on pounded sites that can make all the difference.
Until something better comes along you can be confident that when you hit a site properly with the CTX you will be leaving very little for anyone following you.
I find that the best settings for UK pasture involve using 4 tone ferrous audio (to separate iron and good targets audibly without the need to toggle between programs or check the screen unless one of the higher tones is heard) and having the Recovery Deep 'ON' and Recovery Fast 'OFF' with a minimal discrimination pattern (often just one bar on bottom of screen) just as I would for the Etrac - any additional settings are just personal preference.
The ctx looks very nice and sleek , on looks alone it scores ten out of ten. The ctx is a great detector , any one detecting behind you looking for what you missed with your ctx is going to be dissapointed , the ctx misses very little if anything!.
I recommend the ctx for what it is , it's a super detector but takes hard work to master. The little 6 inch coil is a must have coil if you buy a ctx 3030 , it sniffs coins and rings out from the trash very well indeed , well worth purchasing.
The 17 inch coil is another "must have" coil for your ctx , i found coins were been dug a couple of inches deeper with the 17 inch coil . Larger targets can be found at incredible depth with the 17 inch coil so a bigger spade is a good investment.
The rating i give for this great detector is 9 out of ten.
