The iron discrimination is as advertised, I can count on one hand the pieces of iron junk I have dug. The VDI display is awesome to have as well, I love it that as I learn it I can tell with a good degree of accuracy what I am about to get. You still of course will dig bottle caps and pull tabs, but that is true with any detector. The best thing about it is that you can get a different coil and have in effect a brand new detector. Most detectors and the add on coils (in the budget price range) operate on one frequency. This one can use multiple coils with frequencies for different types of targets.
The main difference between this and the 505 (and the reason I decided to go with the 305) is that the 505 can use the 3.5khz coil where the 305 cannot. If you are a serious coin shooter looking for silver coins and want a high quality "budget" detector, then the 505 is for you. Keep in mind that the 3.5khz coil will cost an additional $180 or so. That said, the 305 and 505 are both equally capable out of the box and are both excellent machines. I'm sure I will upgrade in the future to an XP deus or an E-trac, but for now I cannot imagine doing better than this detector for this price.
One last thing, I have a friend with a Garrett AT pro, and he and I both believe that the 305 and AT pro are very nearly equal in quality and features, the big differences being that the AT pro has a stock DD coil and is waterproof. Other than that the 305 performs equally well for about $250 less.
On the cons, coils are expensive, and it is a little slower in recover compared to Tesoro and Fisher, but as NEswiper's youtube demonstrates it is fast enough to play music.
Buying tips. On high end detectors, the manufacturers will not let retailers advertise below list, so call. They can throw in tools you need and/or make you a lower priced deal, tell you about open box deals, discount accessories, etc. The huge packages you see on larger detector sellers pages are mostly useless. The V-4 pinpointer is a paper weight as is the Bounty Hunter pinpointer. Get a Lesche digging tool and a Garrett Propointer. These two together can get you through 10 times as many targets good and bad, and lead to a lot more goodies, which is the secret to finding good items.
If you decide you do not want ground balancing I would recommend the Fisher F-2 over the old standby of a Garrett 250.
