① Photo showing the light used with one of my 5.5gal tanks.
② Photo of the tank from a slightly different angle, showing the spread & coverage of the light.
③ Showing how the light looks over the tank. What can be seen here is how the light's brackets sit on a rimmed tank, & the size of the light compared to the width of a 5.5gal (tank length: 16.25").
④ Photo showing how the LED diodes have been laid out.
⑤ The LED fixture's length measured (≈10.5" or 26.5㎝) when on top of the tank.
⑥ The LED fixture's width measured (≈3" or 7㎝) when on top of the tank.
I am perpetually searching for lights with dedicated red AND blue diodes, as those wavelengths are the most conducive to plant growth. After owning several different models of lights from various brands, I have found that the ones with the extraneous colors (such as green, orange, pink, etc.) grow a lot more algae than my tanks with just red/blue/white LEDs. So I was EXTREMELY excited to see Mingdak release this light! It was affordable, could ramp up/down, & had just the spectrum I was looking for.
It's been updated recently, but when I made the purchase for the light, there were no specific dimensions listed for each of the models. As I was needing a light specifically for my 5.5gal, I took a chance with buying the smaller unit. Although it was a little smaller than expected, I'm still totally satisfied with the light's spread & coverage of the tank. If Mingdak could please list the exact dimensions of each model of their lights in the future, that would be immensely appreciated. ☺
I waited a few weeks before writing this review in order to get a full assessment of the light's usability (purchased on 11 November 2019). I'll break down my overall experience with the light below:
✔ Light is quite intense, & has remarkable PAR/lumen ratings for its size. I am very successfully growing plants in a low tech tank (note: I use root tabs & fertilizers).
✔ According to the box, the light's specs are as followed: Luminance @ 12" ⇒ 2700 ⁝ PAR @ 12" ⇒ 51 ⁝ RA ⇒ >85 ⁝ Lumens ⇒ 700 ⁝ Kelvin ⇒ 6500K
✔ Able to ramp up & down in order to simulate a sunrise/sunset cycle. I pair the light with Mingdak's Ramp Timer as well.
✔ Aluminum body feels much higher quality than plastic. Also dissipates heat more effectively.
✔ Doesn't get hot to the touch, making it safe to handle.
✔ Very fast shipping! I received my light in one day!
✔ Competitively priced & affordable for a fixture w/ an ideal spectrum.
✔ The light's spread thoroughly illuminated the entirety of the tank, despite the fixture being slightly smaller than my tank. I was very impressed with the coverage.
❌ As other users have mentioned, the adjustable legs sit too loosely & slide very easily. This causes the light to be knocked out of place too readily. This can be fixed easily with some tape or silicone.
❌ The cover for the LED diodes was just a thin piece of transparent plastic. Although it wasn't significant, there was a little bit of wiggle room between the plastic sheet & the light's casing. This could cause water vapor to seep into the light over time & short it out. The edges of the entire fixture along the plastic sheet can be siliconed to waterproof it.
❌ The adjustable legs has the lights sitting very low towards the tank. This isn't a problem for me, but could be an issue for others.
❌ Exact dimensions were not clearly listed initially. I still cannot see the dimensions for the larger unit.
📝 This light was almost everything I was looking for in terms of reliable, bright lights for a low-tech setup. If you're a fan of red/blue/white fixtures like me, then I absolutely recommend it. None of the flaws I experienced really served as a detriment to my user experience with the light—just things that the brand could work on in the future to have their products stand out from the rest.
P.S. To Mingdak, I think it would be more effective to have the listing's first image (and therefore, the thumbnail preview image) to be one of the light showing that it has red/blue/white diodes. I nearly overlooked this light because the black, unlit fixture didn't initially capture my interest at first. I would've immediately clicked on it had I seen the colors of the diodes. 😉
This is a great little light for smaller tanks. I have tried it out on a few different nano tanks(10g and less). For a 10g, it's a little small...but the lit up area is no smaller than the old little marineland led light I compared it to--and at full light capacity, it's at least 3x as bright as the old light. This light will fit perfectly across the top of a 2.5g tank....and with the ability to lower the light level on it, you can easily adjust the brightness.....this light is great for a low tech 10g or a higher tech nano(more than just basic anubias and mosses--trying out some stem plant cuttings, crypts too). I have set this light up on a standard 5 gallon tank with a glass lid. I had to lower the light intensity by a click or 2 so it didn't blind me and the fish. Lol. The plants are growing well, pearling to show their gratitude for the better light 😁🌈 I'm not adding CO2 or fertilizers. Just feed the fish and let the light and plants do their thing(plus a filter of course). I'm excited to be able to grow some nice plants in a nano set up. I just wish the all in one tank kits provided better lights like these. Oh! The timer is an awesome addition! Choose how many hours(3 options) click it to the color coordinated time, and let it go. I thought it only worked once...I was surprised the next day when the light came on, at the exact time I'd started the timer the day before. So, while you cannot choose the hour to start/ stop the timer....it is set up to automatically continue to turn the lights on and off everyday unless or until you change it. Awesome. It sucks to need to have a bunch of timers adding clutter and fire hazard to the hobby areas...I also like how the "remote" is attached, in line with the power cord, and is at a good spot in the cord to easily access to adjust the light(instead of having another remote to lose). This light is one of my best recent purchases. Will definitely look into other lights by this brand. The only thing I can't speak for is longevity. I hope this light lasts. I do get tired of buying lights meant to last thousands of hours(years of use), just to have them poop out after a few months or a year. Hope it lasts. Then it'll be 10 stars. Lol. My little Marineland lights were $40 each back in the day(10 years ago? ) they've been through hell and back(dropped in tanks, kicked around and moved a lot). They aren't as bright as they used to be, but they're still kickin and still grow low light plants well. Now to see how long this light continues to be awesome 🥰
So why do I give this light 4 stars and not less? Because the plants seem to love it, which is this light's saving grace. My plants, in a low-tech setup, pearled like crazy under these lights, more than under the Finnex, which was surprising.
It's not a bad light at all. It's well built, bright and the plants directly under the light seem to actively photosynthesize . All it needs are taller brackets and a warmer color temperature and this would be a near perfect light for the price.
