When I got Sami, I had no idea what breed he was, and most of his coat was gone. At this point, I bought this book, and started at the beginning, paging slowly through it to try to find out what breed he could be. Imagine my surprise when I found out that he was an American Eskimo!
After I knew what breed he was and what he should look like, we tried to find a vet, but the vet practices weren’t up and running yet. Then, I went to a pharmacist, showed him Sami, and I asked him what he thought Sami’s problems were. He told me and then sold me vitamins and medications to cure his alopecia. 3 months later, he was starting to look like a healthy American Eskimo, and growing his glorious coat back.
Because of a threatened re-invasion of Kuwait, we shipped Sami back to the States to my parents and then took some of my husband’s family’s new litter of Chow Chow pups, whose parents were registered, and originally coming from Russia. This male and female pair of Chows was then shipped to Kuwait, where they had a litter. This book again helped us learn more about Chows.
“The Mini-Atlas” has over 500 color photos and or hand-drawn graphics. There are over 400 international breeds showcased, many of whom are recognized by at least one of the international kennel organizations. This hard-cover book has 574 semi-glossy pages.
Some of the breed entries take up 2 pages, while others only take up 1 page. I don’t know what their criteria are for the 2-page entries, but they are probably the more well-known, popular breeds. The standard format for each entry consists of 4 main parts in bold text: ‘Portrait’, ‘Development’, ‘Recognition’, and ‘Character’. At the bottom of the page are an array of symbols found on pages 78-79, and these symbols encompass: the type of breed; the suitability for living inside or outside; whether they are aggressive; the trainability for being a seeing-eye/ assistance or search and rescue dog; the sizes of breed; any special coat care; whether they the need a lot of exercise; the suitability for companionship, etc.
I have bought multiple copies of this book and given them to fellow dog lovers, with one going to our dog trainer (who ‘trains’ me on how to deal with some issues like mixing multiple numbers of dogs and breeds, etc.). He also agrees that this is the best general breed book that he has ever seen.
I also own some outstanding breed-specific dog books, but this is the best book that I own about all of the breeds. The dimensions of this book are slightly less wide than normal books, but it is heavy. I would like to see this same book in a much larger size – bigger and wider.
The authors of this book are Andrew De Prisco and James B. Johnson.
The publisher is T.F.H. Publications, Inc. Neptune City, NJ.
Note that there are multiple international breed organizations for classifying dogs, but the 2 main ones are the UK/ Canadian and the US. The US organizes their dogs into 7 main groups, while the UK organizes their dogs into 6 groups.
The ‘Contents’ of this book begins with the following introductory sections: How to Use This Mini-Atlas; Foreword; Choosing a Best Friend; General Care; Health Care; and Symbol Exposition, pages 5-80.
Next come the 10 classifications of the different breeds, pages 81-539. (Note that all of the different international breed organizations that recognize a particular breed of dog are listed in each entry. For example, American Eskimos are recognized by the UKC, while Chows are recognized by the : FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, and ANKC.):
Part 1: Sighthounds
Part 2: Mastiffs
Part 3: Nordic Dogs (examples include Eskies and Chows)
Part 4: Gundogs
Part 5: Scenthounds
Part 6: Toys
Part 7: Flock Guardians
Part 8: Herding Dogs
Part 9: Terriers
Part 10: Pariahs
Following these there are the:
1. ‘Contributors and Owners’
2. ‘Index’
3. ‘Recommended Reading’ (Bibliography)
Note: In the ‘’Acknowledgements, before the ‘Contents’, the authors mention having read the tome, “The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World”, and this was their reason for creating this ‘mini atlas’ of dog breeds. Guess what my next dog book will be?
“The Mini-Atlas of Dog Breeds” is truly a coffee table book because it won’t stay on a reader’s book shelf for very long! I look at mine constantly.
If I could, I would give this book 10 stars!
