So I was just a wee bit disappointed to discover how primitive the decorating style is in their new book Blue & White - Living with Textiles You Love. But I like that the book provides a sneak peek into their homes, backgrounds, and lifestyles. One section of the book shows how Minick's rugs and Simpson's quilts are used in a Florida home. There are many lust-worthy antique textiles and products throughout the book.
Even though this is not a project book, the authors do point you to external locations for some of the patterns' instructions. Just check out their "Resources" section at the end of the book.
I enjoyed the narrative that accompanies the pictures, insights into the creative process, and personal stories. There are no instructions included for projects, but many of the quilts and rugs do have patterns and they're listed in the back for easy reference. You can find them on their website and you an follow along with their exploits on their blog. I have really enjoyed this book.
Both these artists are self-taught. While they work in different mediums they do have one thing in common…a love of blue and white and are avid textile enthusiasts—both makers and collectors with an appreciation for textiles as art in their homes and in their work. Their work is identified by the many shades of blue and white they use. Polly says “one of my blue-and-white rugs might have 60 or 70 shades of blue in it and 10 to 15 whites.” Laurie says “I prefer to do everything by hand—the piecing, the appliqué, and quilting.” Their Minick & Simpson fabric lines for Moda are almost exclusively red, white, and blue and they are among Moda’s top design teams.
The publisher, Martingale, presents “Minick and Simpson Blue & White!” This is the third hardcover coffee-table book in their series of coffee-table books. I fell in love with this series with their first book “Stitches to Savor” featuring the embroidery work of Sue Spargo. This was followed with Gwen Marston’s book “A Common Thread.”
Whether you are a quilter or a rug hooker or just a lover of textiles you will enjoy the beauty of this book. There are no patterns or projects to be found inside the pages of the book. What you will find are beautifully photographed rooms spotlighting three different homes featuring Americana, coastal and classic styles.
As you savor each and every page you will grow to appreciate the sophisticated beauty of a simple style of decorating and a very limited color palette. The calming blues and crisp whites of the palette will soon have you re-thinking your own decorating style and perhaps even starting a new textile or antique collection or both! Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson invite you to enjoy their inspiring collections. From quilts and hooked rugs to darling vintage pieces the sisters have amassed throughout their lifelong obsession of antiquing, textile creating and collecting.
If you are looking for a tranquil respite from the day to day or you are wanting to daydream of decorating in the classic style of blue and white then this book is for you. The book features 143 pages of beautifully photographed rooms, with detailed photographs of the hand work and helpful advice on using your textiles to their best advantage from Polly and Laurie. I recommend you enjoy this book while sipping on a cooling glass of ice tea and sitting on your front porch. I know I did!
Although no patterns are provided, the sisters give us valuable advice on fabric and wool selection, as well as home accessory purchase and placement to achieve the best decorative results. This is a perfect coffee table book. I doubt it will collect any dust as people will be drawn to its colors and photography.
