Here's a book that is quick to read, but you'll keep it forever for the cleaning-solution recipes. Annie Jean Brewer outlines a no-nonsense approach to cleaning your house and keeping it clean, from getting rid of stuff you don't need to how to mix basic ingredients into the right cleaning solution for the job.

I've been cleaning my own home for nearly forty years, but I still learned a lot by reading this book, including how to lightly wash carpets without renting a big old carpet shampooer. It's the recipes, though, that blew my mind, utilizing ingredients that are common, like baking soda and vinegar, and some that I haven't seen since my grandparents used them (washing soda, Fels Naptha, etc.), but which are still available at places like Ace Hardware. There's even recipes for laundry soap, including ones that are suitable for HE front-load washers.

The book ends with a lively and compelling case for Minimalism and its application in all aspects of life, not just cleaning. Annie's spirited writing style will provide chuckles along with the good information.

while looking for something to help do a "good clean up" to my fairly minimalist home i came across annie jean brewer's book. it's a short read, but very much to the point. in between topics she gives simple recipes with items that we all have in our cupboards, no exotic materials. she also offers a few simple name brands which i again found helpful. i also got a kick out of the personal care cleansing and how little we really need.
as noted it was a quick read, but i found it quite helpful.

If you like recipes for homemade cleaning products, you will like this book. She has some other unusual ideas like mopping carpets but doesn't fully go into the details of how to do it, so it just comes off as a little bizarre. After reading this book, I felt like my cleaning process was more minimalist than hers. It is an interesting read. I may use a tip or two from the book. I don't think I will become a convert to her process. I like my own better.

I was under the mistaken impression that I had to purchase bathroom cleaner, toilet cleaner, kitchen cleaner, laundry detergent, dish washing liquid, dishwasher detergent, sanitizers, and more to get my house properly clean. It isn't so! I have learned that I can do all of that and more with only a few basic ingredients, most of which I already had on the shelf. I tried a few of the cleaning suggestions in this book and found that they actually do work just fine. They also cost a whole lot less than the name-brand cleaners on the grocery store shelves.

It has a lot of great tips and advice, but it wasn't what I was expected. It should have been called The GREEN Cleaning Method. It doesn't focus on how to clean up and organize and be more of a minimalist as I thought it would, but rather tells you how to use as few cleaning products as possible and how to use as few chemicals as possible.

While I probably won't go to this extreme, I learned a lot. Instead of using a different chemical for everything, I can use vinegar, water, and baking soda for many things. Includes recipes to make your own cleaning products and discusses how to live a less cluttered life (which I like). Also discusses how to clean your home in less time.

The Minimalist Cleaning Method by Annie Jean Brewer is a book that very easily pay for itself and then some if one actually puts into practice even a few of the tips in the book. The first part of the book is pretty straightforward minimalism within the context of cleaning which is pretty much the less stuff you have the less house space you have the less time and effort it will take to clean your house. The real value of the book is the recipes and cleaning techniques on how to clean your house for a lot less. The breakthrough cleaning discovery to avoid the need for most products is so simple yet brilliant that I will not repeat it in my review out of respect for the author's work. She also talks about how one can also use a broom to sweep the carpet without an expensive vacuum cleaner, and how to safely mop your carpet the old fashion way to avoid the need for expensive carpet shampoo cleaning. The range of the cleaning recipes include: laundry soap (both powder and liquid), general cleaning solutions and powders, including how to make liquid soap, dish soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, deodorant, perfume bath soak mixes, and insect pest control. The best thing is that all of these cleaning recipes are cheap and easy to make and were commonly used before the rise of the overpriced cleaning product industry that has most of us brainwashed into thinking that if it doesn't have a nice color and scent that it will not be able to really clean. The author also walks the reader through how she cleans different rooms of her house and at the end of the book provides a list of further reading resources that she has personally found very helpful if one wants to read more about simple living.

As a beginner in minimalism, I found this book to be encouraging, easy to read, easy to follow, and downright inspiring. I have put it in my Kindle Fire's favorites, bookmarked many pages, highlighted it, and I plan to refer to it regularly. I recommend this book!
