In general, I really enjoy the fan. The design details are very nice, operation using the wall control is intuitive and responsive, and the fan as well as both lighting functions are excellent.

I installed the fan myself. The instructions provided were lacking in my opinion, but adequate to get the job done. With respect to build quality, the fan housing (motor and lights) is heavy and well built. When installing the light covers (5 plastic pieces to cover the top night lights), I noticed space could have been a bit better as there were some undue stresses introduced when screwing in the thumb screws. This is not a big deal as these are just clear plastic shields that really provide no functionality for the fan. On the other hand, when it comes time to change one of these nightlights while the fan is already mounted, it will be quite difficult. This reminds me: the installation instructions have you mount the motor, and then install the night lights and shields. I performed this step prior to hanging due to the difficulty in reaching over the top for installation. Again, not a big deal, but could be an improvement.

My biggest complaint came earlier in the installation process. After installing my electrical box and reinforcement above the ceiling (not part of the fan) it came time to install the mounting plate. Using two provided 3.5" wood screws, the plate was securely fastened to the ceiling. Then, using pre mounted studs on this plate, you are to install the bracket that the fan will eventually hang on. When screwing the lock nuts onto these studs, one sheared off with not much force about half way up the stud.

Nice looking fan but noisy. Up light and downright are bright enough to function as ceiling light. However, I returned the original one as it is installed in our bedroom and motor was noisy and annoying. Second one received was better and is still installed but I am thinking about returning it also because of noise. For the price paid, you would think the motor would be silent. I have purchased Hunter and Casablanca fans for 1/2 the price with totally silent motors.

Preface: I tried really hard to like these fans. The styling and features are outstanding. However....

I purchased two of these fans for the family room. One was fine. On the other, neither upper or lower lights worked. Continuity test with an ohmmeter showed the neutral an open circuit from top of fan to both lights. All of the connections are buried in the top of the fan motor and inaccessible without full disassembly of the fan motor. After discussing with Minka Tech Support, returned the fan and purchased a new one. New one works, but has a noticeable "song" when the fan is running, even after a break-in period as the instructions suggest. These fans are too expensive for such quality control issues. Motors are made in China affairs, which probably accounts for the poor quality control.
Aside from the quality control issues, here are the other factors that detract from these fans for me:
1. For an expensive fan, the blades are of pretty cheap quality. Paper wood grain finish over a composite. On one fan, the paper finish was noticeable crinkled on four of five blades. I understand the desire for weight consistency of the blade sets, but they could do better.
2. As someone else has noted, the wall control box is too large for older standard light switch mounts. It's the external ground bar underneath the switch that causes the oversize problem. Will have to grind a slot in the switch frame mount for it to fit. Frustrating.
3. The switch itself is an ergonomic nightmare. If you're used to walking in a room and flipping a switch, you'll have fun adjusting to this switch. I ended up wiring the light kits to a normal light switch and using the Minka wall switch to control the fans only...

I bought this fan 7 yrs ago from a lighting store and still love it! It's worth the money spent ... It's the jewel in our living room and received many complements! I have the crystal draping it was standard when I bought it that time. The receiver went out recently but ordered a new one and found an electrician to fix it only $100... It's a high 2 story celing with a 6ft down rod. Now it's good many more years :)
