I’ve been studying this book for a while now. It’s a good textbook, I would say it’s on par with Genki to be the best Japanese textbooks. I personally think if you’re serious about learning the language then you need to have as many books as possible, so I own this and the Genki books and use them together.
A lot of people say that you need a teacher to use this book, as it’s 100% in Japanese. I don’t think that’s necessary. Of course it helps to have a native Japanese speaker help you out, but there are tons of English explanations on the internet of everything in the book. What I do is I attempt to read the chapter and then look up any grammar/vocab I don’t understand.
Ultimately this book will immerse you more in the language, more than Genki, and I think that is very important.

YOU NEED TO BUY THE ACCOMPANYING BOOK OF GRAMMAR NOTES FOR YOUR OWN NATIVE LANGUAGE!!!
This book is not good for super-beginners. I only purchased it because it's the required text for my fully immersive Japanese class. It's a good option for my class because each student can purchase the grammar notes seperately in their own native language, so native English speakers don't have an advantage over everyone else.
It really doesn't explain any grammar points, and you'll need to do a lot of research on your own using other sources to get through this text. If you're truly starting from scratch and learning on your own, you should try the Genki books or Tae Kim's Guide instead.
It also throws you straight into kanji in the first chapter without holding your hand, which personally I really liked. Don't worry, everything has furigana for pronunciation. It's tough, but you'll be thankfully later that you started kanji early.
If you have a little experience under your belt already, this can be an excellent practice book for you! I also learned a lot of words that were very useful in my fully immersive Japanese class (practice, example, polite, plain, present tense, past tense, object, subject, particle, verb, transitive, intransitive, etc.). This vocabulary isn't very useful for day to day communication, but it's invaluable in a classroom setting.

Must-have book for newcomers in Japanese. May be tough to get through without a teacher who’d give you explanations of things since the whole book in entirely in Japanese

Beautiful and very well made, this book introduces you into Japanese from the very first page 'till the last. I recommend using it in every way of learning as you want, but on the condition of doing it seriously because this book is not easy at all and it requires lots of studying time.
It contains a lot of bonus content and it's incredibly user-friendly (Japanese for everyone tho..).
I can't believe my eyes, but I am so happy that I bought it, and you will be as well!

Book is entirely in Japanese, so if you are learning alone you will need the translation book.

This is a great tool for learning Japanese! My teacher suggested I buy the book and I use it for all our lessons! The exercises at the end of the chapters help reinforce what I learned as well!

The book is all I was expecting, and it arrived in decent condition, however, it was not completely sealed off, and the package could have been better. It arrived in a soft envelope too big for the book and since it was not sealed off, the book flicked constantly inside the package causing some bruises on the cover.

This book is only in Japanese, so it might be hard for self-studies. This be great if you know something or someone, so you can get through the book more easier.

Reviewed in Germany on May 23, 2019Verified Purchase

Great book, needs basic understanding first

Advising everyone looking to buy this book: it's 99.9% in Japanese.
I recommend it, no doubt, to assist a class with a Japanese teacher who can tell you what everything means, because it is a very good study material. Having some basics already when I got to this manual, I had no problems with it so far. However, for all those who don't, get to learn the basic japanese alphabets beforehand - this book has them at the beginning, but not the translation of the sounds in rōmaji (latin letters) nor the sound of each character.
To avoid what I just described, you can also get the Translation & Grammatical Notes English ver. as a complement: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/4883196046/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_6

Book not meant for self-learning

Is very hard to get used to it since for this one you will need a complimentary translation book in order to fully learn from it, which can be a huge pain as a learning experience.
This book works if you have a teacher or you're following a guide through YouTube, alongside with the translation notes version.
Can't really recommend it by self-learning purposes.

Brilliant Textbook

Excellent for learning. It promotes the sentence and grammar structures in the practice sections very well and makes you repeat them in different tenses as you work through the book. It is essential if you're starting to learn Japanese from this book that you are able to read hiragana and katakana and have the Minna no Nihongo English translation notes book also in case you need clarification on something. All in all a brilliant book to learn from.
