Not that I expected less, but this is printed on classic high-quality Japanese text book paper, flipping the pages just feels luxurious. That's a bonus.
If you're working through Minna no Nihongo on your own, like I currently am, this book is essential. While it's theoretically possible to learn the kana and then decipher what's going on in the red book independently, unless you're fairly adept at typing in japanese you can't really google the examples, and google translate won't necessarily teach you the same (or correct) things.
If you have a teacher or aren't using the Minna no Nihongo red books... there's no point in getting this book. With a teacher, the red book is a lot easier (I used to have one... they didn't like the red Minna book but we used it alone until other text books came). This book doesn't have enough examples to stand alone as a complete text book. It really is a partner book to the red ones.

I received the book and it was wrap very well, definitely new. I brought it along with the other Minna No Nihongo. This one is the translate version of the other one. I would recommend for any beginner who would like to learn using textbook.

Very well presented lessons that start with vocabulary then detail usage. I use the romaji version - this looks like the kana version from the cover so you would probably need to know hiragana and katakana before using this version. Its a standard text for learning Japanese - I use it for the classes I take in Manhattan. On a recent trip to Japan I decided to take a class at a Tokyo language school and found they were using this book too. Should be used in combination with the red book which has the exercises.

This is a good book for learning, and I found it to be very helpful. I think it's better suited for classroom instruction though, since even along with the red book and kanji book, the explanations are not enough to learn by only self study. Also, some of the phrasings are a little awkward / outdated, and a teacher is helpful here to inform you of what's actually most commonly said in practice.

The grammar points are accurate but the contents and vocabulary lists are incredibly disorganised, some vocabulary items are even out of date. I really struggled until eventually our teacher switched to Genki.

Just a complimentary book for the main minna no nihongo
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2020Verified Purchase
This is only a complimentary book for the main minna no nihongo, you will need both this book plus the full Japanese one in order to learn.
Also, as I stated in my review on the main one, these two books are not meant to be used for self-learning purposes.

Complement to the manual
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2013Verified Purchase
Bought as a complement for Minna no Nihongo 2nd ver: Bk 1 w/ CD - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/4883196038/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_img_sol_3
I haven't used it much since I got it, but it's good to help in the understanding of the actual manual. Not a substitute, though, so I still recommend getting the earlier-referred-to book.
