Here is what you get:
3 cardio routines come with the base kit and with the deluxe kit you get an extra cardio routine. The workouts increase in difficulty as you go. The moves are basic and effective. You repeat each move three times through the routine. For me, I am already bored with Cardio 1, but still enjoy the challenge of the others. I am in pretty good shape and have completed programs like Asylum and P90x3, which are much more difficult that 22 MHC. All of the routines do get the heart pumping.
2 core routines, which are done on the same day as the cardio workouts and last 10 to 12 minutes. Again, the moves are simple and effective. If you've ever done a core workout with Tony Horton before, you know what to expect. These workouts are like shorter, easier cwrsions of Ab Ripper X and X3. The deluxe kit comes with a third core workout that lasts 22 minutes and is brutal.
There are 3 resistance workouts and the deluxe kit comes with a 4th, just like cardio and core. I am less fond of the resistance routines, but they will definitely get you in shape if you push. The cadance Tony uses to complete the moves is pretty fast. It's difficult for me to maintain proper form, use a weight that challenges me, and keep up with every rep. Again, I'm in decent shape, so I imagine it would be even harder for a novice. I have to pause the workout during some moves to get all of the reps in without injuring myself. I could really see inexperienced people trying to rush, falling out of form and getting hurt. Also, there is very little warm up or cool down on any of these workouts. If you want to safely complete thisnprogram, you need to take time to warm up and stretch after your workout.
Cold Start is another routine that comes with 22MHC. It's about 10 minutes long and really good. It's designed to get your muscles ready to work out. I suggest you use it, especially on resistance days. This is a workout I will likely incorporate into other routines.
In addition to the workouts, you get the portion control containers, a shakeology cup, nutrition guide, calander, and a few print outs to guide you through the program. It lasts 8 weeks and workouts are scheduled 6 days a week. I don't use the portion control system, just because it does not suit me. I know others have had tremendous success with that system, but I do better with less structure in my diet. I am also not looking to lose weight, so if you are, you should try the portion control system and see if it will work for you.
You also get a sandbag that is optional to use with your workouts. I have not tried it yet. I've just been using dumbells. Speaking of, you will need dumbells, a pull up bar, and yoga mat to complete this program.
So here are my thoughts about the program so far:
I am concerned that the very quick cadence will cause inexperienced people, or people who are not in great shape to get injured. If this is you, please press pause when needed, warm up before you start and do more of a cool down then is provided.
There are so many burpees! Having done Shaun T workouts, I'm no stranger to burpees, but be prepared for several versions of burpees and lots of them.
Tony is Tony. He does alot less talking than in previous programs, and there is less instruction between moves. He is still motivating and likeable. He acts as more of a drill Sargent and doesn't do the workout with you, like he did with his previous programs.
While the main videos are 22 minutes, I have yet to only do 22 minutes and be done. On cardio days, I do the extra core routine that is recommended, making my workout time more like 32-34 minutes, plus a short cool down. On resistance days, I do Cold Start and then add a short cool down, so again it's more like 35 minutes.
With a workout that is so short, you have to watch your diet carefully to make changes.
If you are trying to decide between the base package or the deluxe kit... it depends what your trying to do. If you need help with your diet and want to lose weight, then go for the deluxe kit becuase you get the portion control containers and these will likely be helpful to you. The three workouts that come with the deluxe kit are good, but probably not worth double the price of the base kit. It would only be worth it if you plan to closely follow the diet. The sandbag is totally optional, so it's probably not worth buying the deluxe kit to get the sandbag. I think the dumbells are working just fine and I can adjust my weight up or down without having to make a mess.
Lastly, I really like the military theme to this workout and I think Beachbody did a great job honoring our troops and vets with this program. All of the people in the videos are veterans and it is so awesome to see. Each workout is like a tiny glimpse into how much work our troops have put into protecting our freedom and keeping us safe. I think they did a great job highlighting this aspect and making you feel connected to them on some level.
The PT sandbag is a great tool, but it really isnt required. You can very easily substitute dumbbells for each exercise that uses it. It would have been better if the sandbag could handle more weight, as 20# was a little light for a few specific exercises.
The workouts are simple and straight to the point. You jump right into the deep end and dont stop until its over. The optional Cold Start is highly recommended. Although the title says 22 minutes, if you do the Cold Start before (10 min) and the Core workouts after (10 min), you technically will be working out for 32-42 minutes each day. The structure is the same for each workout. Cardio 1,2,&3 all have 7 moves repeated 3x and Resistance 1,2&3 has 5 moves repeated 3x. The first round for all workouts will have a quick demo for each move, but in rounds 2 and 3 the demo is gone and you just go from move to move.
I feel this overall is better than P90X3. I felt that some of the workouts from that program were just lacking intensity. I also LOVE Insanity Max 30, but feel that gets just a little repetitive and wish it had just ONE workout that had weights and pull ups. 22 Minute Hard Corps fills that gap. Its not AS intense as Max 30, but it gets close. For 40 bucks (base kit), i dont think you will find a better bang for your buck.
Only thing i wish this program had was that brilliant modifier specific track that was in Insanity Max 30. I think that should be a new standard option in every Beachbody workout, since it makes life so much easier.
