Editorial Reviews

For his first new album in five years, 'Minute By Minute,' British soul man James Hunter teamed with Daptone mastermind Gabriel Roth (Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones) for a horn-fueled blast of deep soul and R&B. The album's 12 new original songs mark not only Hunter's first collaboration with Roth (aka Bosco Mann), but his first time recording in America. Due out Feb 26 (N. America) & March 25 (ROW) on Fantasy Records, 'Minute By Minute' follows 2008's 'The Hard Way.'

At the age of fifty James Hunter has delivered yet again, unsurprisingly another gem. This is vintage, blues-soul with a large side of funk at its best.

If you haven't discovered James by now then you're lucky cause he's got a number of gems released and they're all good, but honestly the "six" he's put together may provide his most layered, smokey and textured album yet.

I have heard others compare Hunter to Sam Cooke and James Brown, but for me he ultimately reminds me a ton of Otis Rush's prime years and especially of Buddy Guy during his Chess years. It's a fantastic sound and James Hunter went all the way to reproduce it, not only with the songs, but with the recording process. When listening through the album I almost can taste the smoke, the dirt and smell the spilled beer of a juke joint. They recorded this album in Lo-Fi and it shows, and it's exceptionally awesome and sounds like a record I picked up at the thrift store...which I personally like. It is perfectly recorded in my opinion.

Lol my fiancée just came in and said "I haven't heard this Ray Charles song before." Yeah it's that good.

There's a bunch of Gems here, but my +++ are:

"Drop on Me," heavy horn section, medium pace, and a great "one more time," catch-phrase.

"Look Out," A swingin' feast of a song that really shows Hunter's vocal range and brings a hard beat behind him. Great `twang guitar solo, and backing keyboard.

"Minute by Minute," Title track, Hunter gets gruff on it with some soulful singing. The musicality of this track is layered and deep. Awesome.

Now that I think of it the only other album I can think of that rivals this kind of old-soul-blues awesomeness in the modern era is Huey Lewis' 1994 album, "Four Chords & Several Years Ago."

Classic music this good doesn't come out that much anymore, so when it does, you gotta love it.

If you're not familiar with James Hunter, he's a British musician who puts out some of the best R&B, or music based on classic R&B, currently being released.

This 2013 release is excellent, as are all of Hunter's previous CDs.

Hunter's influences obviously include 1950s and 1960s R&B greats like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and James Brown, among others. He has that 1950s and 1960s R&B style down pat while adding his own twist to it.

If you like classic 1950s and 1960s R&B, you'll like James Hunter's music. Highly recommended.

For those who already know about James Hunter, this album is one of his best. If you liked his earlier work, you'll like this one.

Having come of age in the early 60s listening to James Brown and Ray Charles, I got a bad case of R&B-osis that never let go. But after a while one gets tired of listening to the same old tracks. If only someone would come along and make that music new again....and now they have. James Hunter and his band live and breathe the sounds of late 50s/early 60s American soul music, but with their own material. At first Mr. Hunter sounds a lot like James Brown, but then you hear the Sam Cooke influences and many wrinkles of his own. This is my first album of his and I'm amazed at how understated it is. First of all, it is monaural--wow, I haven't heard that since 1965! Each of the instruments--guitar, Hammond B3 organ, drums, horns--are admirably restrained, the guitar is not pushed to the point of distortion. They are almost an acoustic band, though amplified. The horn section, anchored by the bari sax, wraps brief punchy riffs around James' lyrics, simple evocations of love hoped for, but more often lost. My favorite is the ballad "So They Say"--grab your date, hold her tight as you dance a slow shuffle, and hope the evening will never end!

We saw this band w/Bonnie Raitt at summerfest and they were awesome. James is so talented. When he did his final number w/the incredible guitar licks and his (what I would call similar to what Chuck Berry used to do) only much more animated and pefectly timed, I was absolutely stunned!

The switch to the DapTone record label makes total sense. He fits right in, and along with the label change, made the switch to the James Hunter Six to give proper credit to his excellent band. This is modern soul at its finest, and if you dig any soul at all, I'd find it difficult to believe you won't enjoy this record. Definitely worth adding to your collection!

Normally I'm reluctant to buy anything based merely on reviews. Been disappointed so many times before. Bought this on a whim and HOLY CRAP. The other reviewers here have nailed it. Like a combination of Sam Cooke, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, all rolled into one -- only without the whiny gospel and pointless screaming bits. And it doesn't just stop with the vocals. This is a very tight band that clearly loves the type of material they're playing. Highly recommended.

James Hunter Six's "Minute By Minute" is a delightful retro romp. The title track is an instant classic with its pulsing beat creeping like the hands of a clock and Hunter's vocals dripping with desire, "Ain't no worry cause time's my friend, I'll get you in the end." "Let the Monkey Ride" is another jewel with its soft soul groove, "They say you better let her go, she's no good for you; but I couldn't cut her loose if I wanted to; If the truth be told, I never tried." "The Gypsy" sounds a lot like the 60s "Fortune Teller" that can be found on the Rolling Stones' More Hot Rocks: Big Hits & Fazed Cookies. "Heartbreak" and "Gold Mine" are also gems on a set that is consistently strong. Enjoy!
