Using this Universal Feeder with a good water wand is much easier and effective. The only problem in my view was buying the little bottles of fertilizer to use with the system. It does not make sense to be shipping water around the country, when I have plenty of water available at my house. Also, the bottles are pretty small and run out in about fifteen minutes, so I needed to keep an eye on the fertilizer level to be sure that I still had some fertilizer left in the bottle. I also did not like the idea of only using a bottle once and then throwing it away. That seems wasteful to me.
I dealt with these issues by adapting one of the little bottles so that I could mix up my own fertilizer and then add it to the bottle. I also expanded the capacity of the system by adding a gallon bottle to the little bottle. This way, I can mix up a batch of fertilizer a gallon at a time and water for an hour or more without worrying about running out of fertilizer. Mixing the blue crystals one to one with water produces a concentration that is identical to that found in the LiquaFeed bottles, since the crystals have exactly twice the N-P-K as the liquid in the bottles.Read more ›
> Three of the four universal feeders I purchased have broken---specifically the ~ 1 1/2" plastic band which holds the main parts together split open---one only 1 week after being installed. The forth universal feeder leaks. So, I've reduced the rating from 5 stars to 2.
> The feeder screws into your faucet and your hose screws into the feeder.
> The feeder has a variable switch-lever-valve between full on (delivering fertilizer) and full off (water only), It will empty a liquid fertilizer bottle in 10-15 minutes.
> The angle is adjustable, so you can use it on almost any faucet, regardless of the angle.
> The feeder works with timers or even splitters.
> Apparently the feeder actually pumps the liquid fertilizer, so the concentration should be more uniform than using a granular Miracle-Gro feeder.
> Both the granular and liquid Miracle-Gro feeders can clog up if you don't use-up the fertilizer, rinse, and dry the feeders after every use. The "faucet feeder" should not clog up, since it is connected all the time. None of my 3 MG "universal" feeders have clogged up in 5 months of constant use.
> You can use any nozzle or even lawn sprinklers you want at the end of your hose. I use one feeder with a timer and a portable rainbird sprinkler. For nozzles, I particularly recommend a Gilmour Select-A-Spray Comfort Grip Nozzle 594 Black/Teal
> The plastic of the connections is soft. It is very easy to cross-thread when installing the feeder on your faucet, or when installing your hose on the feeder.Read more ›
First off, I love the packaging. It comes in a plastic holder with everything held securely in place. Remove one cap and push one lever and everything is off the holder and ready to use. You attach the feeding device to the spigot (I recommend a little Teflon tape to seal it), then attach your hose (again with Teflon tape) to the device. No struggle, no strain. The spigot portion is even angled slightly to attach securely to the spigot but leave the feeder bottle in a perfectly upright position. That means it is very well designed to maximize usage of the fertilizing fluid. Thoughtfully, the feeding bottle itself comes with a feeder insert so you don’t drip or dump any fertilizer while screwing it into the fixture. Very nice. Turn on the water and you are ready to go.
To switch from watering to feeding you just turn the dial. The device feeds the plants just the right amount of Miracle-Gro LiquaFeed (or whatever you are using). If you don’t need to feed, switching to water is as easy as turning the dial back. Simple and effective. The price of the LiquaFeed seems reasonable to me (a four pack of the all-purpose plant food is selling for around $12 on Amazon as I write this), but in my limited testing, I’m not sure how long it will last.Read more ›
