I remove the mushrooms as soon as I seen them come out of the soil (the grow overnight), and I even dig to remove the ones from underneath the soil. However, I am afraid that these fast-growing mushrooms are taking up a lot of the soil nutrients and damaging my plants. Any advice on how to get rid of them forever?
This is not to say that Miracle Gro doesn't have its problems; not the least of which is that it often contains too much, and/or the wrong combination of fertilizers for many plants. That's because the formula is an attempt at a "one-brand-fits-all idiot-proof product" (i.e. "Jack of all trades, master of none"). I've seen many a case of Miracle Gro users mistaking nutrient burn for nutrient deficiency and ending up feeding their plants to death, when all they would have had to do was stop watering so often. Which brings us to another of Miracle Gro's shortcomings: its nagging tendency to hold too much water for too long (more idiot-proofing), which is the true underlying cause of all the aforementioned problems.
Just know what you're getting into when you buy Miracle Gro, because its not simply the benign Sand, Perlite and Sphagnum Moss mixtures that many other brands are.
Just don't expect too much. I did manage to kill two seedlings planted in this soil. One by overwatering and one by under watering. The soil does all it can, but it's not all-powerful. You still need to put in the effort and maybe keep a watering log to help your brain remember what needs to be done.
Well I decided to plant seeds in it, alongside a planter filled with soil from my backyard (which seems to be pretty decent soil itself) - the quickest way to determine just how well Miracle-Gro's Moisture Control potting mix works. Here are the results:
Germination: The Miracle-Gro seeds sprouted, on average, about a day earlier than the backyard soil, and with a slightly (very slightly) higher percentage of seeds sprouting.
Soil quality: Through whatever voodoo, the Miracle-Gro Moisture Control does actually seems to both retain moisture longer (I don't need to water as often, in other words) and dissipate the water more evenly. Also, it's "pure" stuff - no twigs, rocks, clumpy bits.
A few days on: The Miracle-Gro seeds are doing really well. Those in the backyard soil - if I had to put a percentage on it - are doing about 75% as well - growing more slowly and each plant seems a little thinner.
I like growing vegetables from seed, and this 8-Quart package makes that pretty easy and buys me a little more of a growing season. Price isn't bad either.
