I bought this soil less than a year ago and mixed it with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix, 8-Quart (same brand and seller). With the arrival of warm weather yellow mushrooms (like the ones in the photo) have popped up everywhere. Obviously one of the two bags of soil was contaminated with spores.
I remove the mushrooms as soon as I seen them come out of the soil (the grow overnight), and I even dig to remove the ones from underneath the soil. However, I am afraid that these fast-growing mushrooms are taking up a lot of the soil nutrients and damaging my plants. Any advice on how to get rid of them forever?
Thanks,

Fungus gnats occur wherever biological material is allowed to rot under wet, temperate conditions. They are not put there by some diabolical corporate scientist with huge vats of fungus gnat eggs perched above the assembly line. There ARE ways to deal with fungus gnat infestations: one is to not water so much; another is to add perlite to the mix so it dries out faster; yet another is to put a fine layer of sand on top of the soil so they can't lay their eggs. At any rate, what you SHOULD be taking from all of this is that fungus gnats would not be there in the first place if Miracle Gro potting soil were not a perfect medium to support biological life.

This is not to say that Miracle Gro doesn't have its problems; not the least of which is that it often contains too much, and/or the wrong combination of fertilizers for many plants. That's because the formula is an attempt at a "one-brand-fits-all idiot-proof product" (i.e. "Jack of all trades, master of none"). I've seen many a case of Miracle Gro users mistaking nutrient burn for nutrient deficiency and ending up feeding their plants to death, when all they would have had to do was stop watering so often. Which brings us to another of Miracle Gro's shortcomings: its nagging tendency to hold too much water for too long (more idiot-proofing), which is the true underlying cause of all the aforementioned problems.

Just know what you're getting into when you buy Miracle Gro, because its not simply the benign Sand, Perlite and Sphagnum Moss mixtures that many other brands are.

I have a brown thumb. I don't kill every plant I touch, but only the hardiest survive my attempts to love them. I have a tendency to overwater and an absent-minded-professor brain that easily forgets which plants need a lot and which ones need a little. So, this potting mix is a godsend for me. It absorbs a lot of extra water and keeps it from killing the plants, while retaining the water so if the professor goes away the plants survive.

Just don't expect too much. I did manage to kill two seedlings planted in this soil. One by overwatering and one by under watering. The soil does all it can, but it's not all-powerful. You still need to put in the effort and maybe keep a watering log to help your brain remember what needs to be done.

How to review potting mix?

Well I decided to plant seeds in it, alongside a planter filled with soil from my backyard (which seems to be pretty decent soil itself) - the quickest way to determine just how well Miracle-Gro's Moisture Control potting mix works. Here are the results:

Germination: The Miracle-Gro seeds sprouted, on average, about a day earlier than the backyard soil, and with a slightly (very slightly) higher percentage of seeds sprouting.

Soil quality: Through whatever voodoo, the Miracle-Gro Moisture Control does actually seems to both retain moisture longer (I don't need to water as often, in other words) and dissipate the water more evenly. Also, it's "pure" stuff - no twigs, rocks, clumpy bits.

A few days on: The Miracle-Gro seeds are doing really well. Those in the backyard soil - if I had to put a percentage on it - are doing about 75% as well - growing more slowly and each plant seems a little thinner.

I like growing vegetables from seed, and this 8-Quart package makes that pretty easy and buys me a little more of a growing season. Price isn't bad either.

Miracle-Gro soils have consistently been the best mixes I've purchased and yield the greatest results every time. Over the summer, I planted a larger garden than usual and ran out of the Miracle-Gro bags that I'd purchase. When I went to buy more, I decided to try one of the other similar soil brands to save a little money and was very disappointed. The Miracle-Gro is definitely worth the extra money in order to yield the best plant growth results. I bought this smaller bag of potting mix to use to grow indoor herbs for the winter and my herbs are thriving! I have my herbs near a large window in my kitchen, but it's been so dark and grey that I also purchased a plant grow light for one of my kitchen fixtures to supplement the potting mix (this one: GE 49891 - F20T12/PL/AQ/ECO Fluorescent Plant Aquarium Light Bulb 1-pack. Together, this Miracle-Gro potting mix and plant light have allowed me to grow big, beautiful, healthy herbs indoors despite the freezing, grey winter in Erie, PA. Very happy with this purchase!!

The dirt is nice, but it's filled with gnats - now my house is teeming with them! I had to buy lava rock to top the soil with, and am now buying NeemCake to try to kill them. I'm so sick of bugs in my coffee, landing in my food (or my kids' food!), and buzzing my head all day... it's ridiculous.
