Editorial Reviews

STRFKR provided the soundtrack to over 100 ecstatic sold-out dance parties in tiny, sweaty rooms for over two years. Miracle Mile is a record with swirling keyboards that take you up, down, and all around, rhythmic guitars, irresistible basslines, and drums that keep an unrelenting beat.

Yea, I know, the name, right? Ignore it. Or better yet, embrace it, because this music wants to embrace you. Groovy electrofunk that starts and doesn't stop, mixed with swirling guitars and synths out of some acid dream-pop fantasy. Vocals that remind me of some of the most insistent Maroon 5 choruses, in the best way possible--i.e. catchy beyond belief and a heck of a lot of fun. Great album for synth lovers from start to finish; infectious groovy fun.

Alternative outfit STRFKR return in February 2013 to release third effort Miracle Mile, via Polyvinyl. Miracle Mile serves as the follow up to the band’s 2011 album, Reptilians. STRFKR’s personnel is Josh Hodges, Shawn Glassford, Keil Corcoran, and Patrick Morris. Consistent and enjoyable over the course of 15 tracks, Miracle Mile makes one want to dance as well as analyze the lyrical content.

“While I’m Alive” initiates capably, distinguished by exceptional production with a dance-sensible beat. The songwriting is thoughtful, delivering a message to the effect of getting past loneliness, putting the past behind you, and living life ‘while [you’re] alive’. “Sazed” (a slang word for being ‘put in your place’) keeps momentum going, filled with nice instrumental ideas/cues. The refrain is simple (“Call, call me out…”), but embodies its message commandingly. “Malmö”, keeping in step, delivers the ‘goods’, with it’s bass heavy production and ornamental synths. Here, the frontman sings “...No more distractions / nothing to hear / keeping the distance / over the years…”, likely referencing a past relationship (btw Malmö is located in Sweden).

“Beach Monster” signals a run of four brief cuts, ranging from under a minute to just over two minutes. Exhibiting a rawness, “Beach Monster” represents indie at its best and truest in the space of just over two minutes. The pleasant “Isea” spends its briefer :52 to convey clever, if suggestive lyrics “We spoke of summer, fall back together / Said it will be better to stay in doors all day.” “Yayaya” is repetitive, but lyrics “See it gets higher” being treated in repetitive fashion hint well at its overall message (can you guess?).

Don't know how I ever came across this band, but enjoy their music a lot. Until I listen to it for weeks, it is hard to say if this album is better than their past albums. After listening to the whole thing, I really like Nite Rite.

I am a huge fan of the albums Jupiter and Reptilians, and I honestly had low expectations for this album. After listening to it last night, I am blown away. This album is incredible! Badass music! I would definitely recommend buying this album. Every single song on this album is good.

I really like this album, they have such a unique sound! They stepped it back a little bit and had a few songs that had the feel of their first album. If you are a Starfucker fan you have to buy this!

Okay, 5 stars for the music, I'd give it 6 if I could, but the first vinyl they sent me was extremely warped, and now the replacement skips really bad and also the needle slides inward when dropped, skipping the first few seconds of the first song on each disc. Super disappointed since the album is musically and aesthetic gorgeous, just wish my vinyl would play correctly after already returning once.

"Miracle Mile" is a typical STRFKR album, being amazing in most respects but containing a few odd songs. Most of the songs are up-beat, catchy melodies with fantastic bass and synth. The words and lyrics are less of a tool than the mere presence and tune of voices. STRFKR has some very unique riffs and combinations of instruments/ sounds, exemplified by their hit "While I'm Alive." It shows in "Kahlil Gabran" and "Beach Monster" as well. Then there are the more traditional techno-pop type songs like "Malmo," "Atlantis," and , one of my personal favorites of their collection, "Leave It All Behind." The slow down songs, "Say to You" in the middle of the album and "Golden Light" as the closer, keep the others in check, providing an escalation and deescalation effect to further appeal to listeners. Unfortunately, as with their other albums, a few of the songs are far from their usual sound, such as "Isea."

Overall I rate Miracle Mile as a great album that suffers from some overly experimental moments. However, this is a good thing in my opinion, as even though I do not like some of the songs I respect and admire STRFKER for attempting to push the limits of their own music. I highly recommend listening to their albums 'Reptilians' and 'Jupiter' (especially the song "Medicine") if Miracle Mile appeals to you at all.

5 second version: If you like upbeat techno with a pop-music feel, try this album.

If I could have one of three records on a desert island in the middle of the ocean, this one would be an incredibly strong contender. Absolutely bloody fantastic from start to finish, this is STRFKR's crowning achievement.
