probably an atheist and had a bias against The Church. The Roman Catholic Church leadership has had a
long, loathsome history of oppression against Jews, women, Orthodox Christians...AND SIDING WITH MUSLIMS
TO DESTROY THE ORTHODOX, EASTERN ROMAN EMPIRE; BUT, the saving grace
is to be found at the parish level where most good is done.
Cordy the author, had The Brotherhood acting in ways no 2,000 year old secret org would behave...taking
Carter to their 2,000 year old HQ?! When cut-out locations were available!? Gilding the Lily...enhancing
the story line beyond credulity.
Anyway, a great first effort. I wish Amazon had a 10 star review system. I'd give this 9 stars.
I have been unable to look at tapeworms and DNA the same way since reading it years ago.
Cordy's description of the villain's killings were very DISTURBING. These were the only parts of the book I skipped. I've seen and experienced enough disturbing things in my life. I don't want to fill my brain with more while expecting entertainment. He has the same mindset as Hollywood about violence and sex. People don't have to be bashed over the head with graphic details to move the plot along and develop characters.
If you were offended by the book "The Shack" by W.P Young you will want to BURN this book. But if you're strong and knowledgable in your faith you'll understand both books are works of fiction. I'm a big fan of Young's work and even think of him as wise in the Christain faith. While I believe only God truly knows the heart of each child He's created, I am suspicious that Cordy is an atheist. Worst yet, he is an atheist that did not do his homework. The idea that DNA from Christ could be passed down and provide healing is pretty cool, BUT it makes some big assumptions. And, we all know what happens when people ASSume.
How could DNA be passed if Christ didn't have children?
How can a Messiah save others from their sin if they do not live a perfect life (a thought briefly addressed but seemingly plowed into oblivion)?
What about the rapture and the return of Jesus (not another messiah)?
While Cordy makes some interesting points he defiles the deepest meanings of Christainty and shreads the truths of the Bible to fit his atheistic plot. Again I point out this is fiction.
I did enjoy his scientific ideas of how Jesus healed. I thought Cordy's idea of extracting Christ's DNA was really cool without compromising Jesus' divinity. I'm like Madame Curie and my love for science continues to confirm my faith in God. Which leads to my annoyance in the hero's sidekick. I should not be surprised that a suspected atheist author would make a brilliant scientist weak in her faith. Maybe I should think that Dr Washington has spent so much time studying computers that she's neglected her spiritual needs? No, I believe true lovers of science understand and embrace the logic of God.
I do like that Cordy never seems to out-right deny the existence of God, hence the hero's father as professor of theology and Dr Washington. And, I appreciate his somewhat respectful treatment of Christainity, a rare occurence. I may look for more of his books and hope he's researched the Christain faith better.
