Laura's transparency as she shared personal details of her life will strike common ground with any reader. It was an especially fun read for me having lived for two years in Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast of Australia:)
Laura and Brendan met on a Christian dating website. Laura had survived two devastating marriages and divorces. She doubted online dating could bring the love she longed for.
Brendan’s wife had tragically and suddenly passed away, leaving him alone with their three children. Recovering from his enormous loss took some time, and even as he and Laura began getting to know each other, he struggled to leave the past behind.
But God had a plan.
Laura lived in California, Brendan in Australia. The distance was an obstacle; but Laura shares how she sensed God drawing her to Brendan’s profile, and how thrilled she was when Brendan initiated a conversation with her. She describes the gentle cues that God gave each of them along the way, detailing the confirmations from family and friends that they were on the right track.
Please note that it’s important to remember, as Laura and Brendan did, that any direction we believe God is giving us should agree with God’s Word, the Bible. If we “sense” God leading us into an affair with a married man, for example, that is not God’s direction. It goes against the Bible’s teachings. The Bennets were connected to strong believers who helped them navigate their courtship according to Biblical principles.
Any discussion of online dating has to include a caution, too. If you’re considering dating this way, be sure to include trusted friends and advisors on your journey. Beware of men asking for money or making premature, flattering statements about their “feelings” for you. Never get into a car with someone you’ve just met. First dates should happen in a public place. Don’t give out personal information until you are sure of a person’s character.
OK, back to the rave.
I love Laura and Brendan’s story. It encourages me that God is in control of my life, and he is good. Laura writes, “God held all the shattered pieces of both (our) lives, and he had a good plan.” That’s true for all of us!
This writer took me into her world of seeking a Christian soul mate, and I read it quickly while at the same time not wanting her book to end.
Who could imagine that two lonely people who have suffered heart break and who live in different countries would ever meet and connect?
A widower with young children living in Australia and a twice divorced American woman with young adult children who lives in California met on a Christian online dating site. The obstacles in their paths were overwhelming, and sadness, tears and doubts occurred amid sparks of joy.
The best part is that they each trusted God to guide them with each step they took as they grew to love each other. When would they meet in person? Would they marry? Live in Australia? Live in California? What about jobs? Selling a home? Schools for his children? It sounds daunting but trusting Jesus, they believed it just might work.
Read this book to hear about this “miracle of us” adventure toward love.
God's hand was more than evident throughout their ordeal in a powerful and exciting, miraculous way.
