This is a great collection of songs by The Miracles, basically a "Best of" CD, but it also includes their entire "City of Angels" album, a rare "concept album" from the mid-1970s.
I recently bought the 2-for-1 CD reissue of "Renaissance" and "Do It Baby" by the Miracles and enjoyed that one tremendously. I remember hearing a few singles ---- hits such as "Love Machine" and "Do It Baby" --- by the Miracles, after Smokey left and Billy Griffin replaced him, but I had never heard an entire album by them. My loss. This was great soul music.
Wanting to hear more by this version of the Miracles I decided to get "City of Angels". But ... the original CD was out of print and only available from secondhand dealers. There WAS a 2015 CD reissue available through Amazon, but there was no track listing, so I couldn't tell if there were any bonus tracks or not. On the original CD reissue they included a 7-minute instrumental version of "Love Machine". But then I discovered that this "Essential Collection" had the entire "City of Angels" album (except it didn't have the instrumental bonus track), plus some other tunes from their 1973-1976 period. And the price was reasonable too. Okay, sign me up, I'll take it!
And indeed, this is a wonderful collection of music. There are a few songs that repeat what I have on the other 2-for-1 CD, but there are enough other fabulous songs, plus with over 70 minutes of music included, this CD is a great deal. You can read the other reviews for a description of what "City of Angels" was all about, but for its time it was a bold and daring --- and very satisfying --- collection of songs. I mean, to record a song such as "Ain't Nobody Straight in L.A." took a lot of you know what! Very impressive material. And Billy Griffin's vocal shine throughout that album. His sweet falsetto reminds sometimes of the guy from the Sylistics, or even Blue Magic, with a touch of the Spinners thrown in for good measure. That sweet '70s soul sound. Nothing else like it.
