Now I'm off to read PDS 3
I read the first book I think last year or maybe the year before, and enjoyed it. This one I'm a bit confused with not sure if it's another case or supposed to be like a prequel. Maybe it was just a part or 2 that had me think that. I asked the author and its a Sequel with flashbacks. I'm sure its doesn't help that I don't get to read a chapter or 2 every day. The series is written from Angelica Cross' perspective in the present day with flashbacks to her childhood.
Angelica is the founder of the PID, and has a past with detective Mancini. They were married in one of his past lives. He doesn't like vampires, even though he seems to have been with 2, although one was human when they were together. Witch Fiona Gargoyle (man that sounds like a monster high character) Wait that's not the right spelling... but its something like Guilfoyle (maybe that isn't the actual character's name but I don't have my kindle in front of me to check spelling) was obsessed with detective Mancini in his past life, and if she can't have him, then no one can. Angelica after dispatching the witch in the last book or so we think, learns she is back and thinks she may be a demon or be in co-hoots with them. Miranda a woman from Danny's past and vampire, has come back now that her family is all gone and joins the case. The witch is utilizing werewolves to attack the detectives, to catch Danny and kill Angelica. I remember the last book having more action, this one is more suspenseful so I guess with each book we may get more of a heavier lean on a certain genre. What is Fiona's ultimate plan? Will she be able to make her special Werewolves, ones of her own making that will only be loyal to her, and will they actually succeed in capturing the detectives? Did I mention Detective Mancini is psychic? If he touches someone or something he will see the past.
This book is very well written, smooth flowing and easy to read. The author did a great job portraying the characters, their emotions and the experiences they go through. Once I started the first book I couldn't put the books down. I went straight from book 1 to book 2, and will continue until I have finished the whole series. I can't get enough of it. There is always a new twist right around the corner to keep things interesting.
Danny Mancini has finished his mission to deal with Vincent Cross, the man who caused him to lose his career as a Detective for the CPD. While working the case, he learned more than he wanted to. Although he was drawn to Angelica Cross, whom he now knows is a half-vampire, half-human, and that he himself is her former lover/husband Jonathan Price reincarnated, it's just all too much. In this life, he would much rather hide his head in the sand, and pretent that vampires, witches, werewolves, etc are just fictional creatures from books and movies.
Unfortunately for him, that's not in the cards. He and the PID are going to need each other's help much sooner than he would have liked. When cursed werewolves show up at his home, he knows that he is in over his head. With as much as he wants to stay away from the PID, that is exactly where he ends up.
He also comes to the realization that while nobody likes to lose a loved one, sometimes it would be better if the dead would actually stay dead.
I highly recommend this book to those who love paranormal, romance, vampires, werewolves, witches etc. If you enjoyed book 1 in this series, I highly recommend you read book 2. I will be going straight into book 3 and can't wait to see what happens next. Review for Mommy's Naughty Playground.
I liked how Luchesi effortlessly continued the plot from Stake-Out; there are not any huge, unexplained gaps in the timeline that require a long recap of the events in Stake-Out. The action begins almost immediately, and I enjoyed the addition of other paranormal elements in the story that were blended in with the existing plot elements.
I was thrilled to learn about the origins of the PID and Angelica's past, which included an interesting twist about why werewolves and vampires are rivals. I think that this twist in the plot added realism to Angelica's character while maintaining the kick-ass and confident nature that I loved about her in Stake-Out.
Finally, I enjoyed the realistic dynamic between Angelica and Danny. I got the impression that both of them had moved on, but their feelings for each other remained unresolved. When Danny returned to the PID, they both had reasons why they were reluctant to pick up where they left off in their relationship. This added an intriguing dimension to the plot as they tried to sort out their feelings for one another.
If you are looking for a fast-paced paranormal, urban fantasy; look no further!
