Ever hear "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"? This has a lot of that in it, and it goes both ways! As a programmer, I've identified with a lot of the geekery in the Tech division. I've wished so hard to have some of their reality in this one. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with some of the characters, and hated others. A lot of this story is lighthearted and fun, but it's desperately needed because the main character is so very broken and her life, from the very beginning and into her future, is often littered with tragedy.
So, I have not yet read this book. Not *this* book. I read the original online when it was posted as a serial, and when I found the author rewrote it to fix some things (what needed fixing, anyways?), I needed to go buy it. I'll go do a review after I've read this rewrite too, but I'm awfully excited to have the chance! It'a also up on the author's site for free if you want to read it online, but she totally deserves to get paid for this book, her series kept me enthralled for most of a year before the fact that it was a serialization, and I tend to hop from serial to serial until I've 'caught up' made me hop away. But hey, now I have a whole book to read!
I wasnt really hooked on my first read of this book alone, it's not so much a standalone as a jumping off point, stumbling into the new normal of the fantastic. The story evolves in an LGBTQIA+ and neurodiversity normative experience. Characters in this serries combat PTSD and thoughts of their own inadiquacy. As much as bad things happen, also healing and sweet heartwarming moments build you and them back up afterwards.
