While the combat can make you stop, I had so much to do in the combat that I actually wanted to stop just to fight the guys. It looks very cool and is very fun to perform.
In terms of the Parkour, it does add more to the movement system, but at the same time it adapts the new map in such a sleek way that it compliments new movement system, rather than give you new moves to get around a very similarly designed map. It also is very fun to execute and the animations are very smooth and nice looking.
The things that aren't so great about it I could say would be:
1. The Story
Now, while the story isn't all that bad, it's still pretty cliché and it suffers from the exact same problem as some of the marvel cinematic universe movies do, where they spend too much time setting stuff up for a later installment, and not enough time developing things properly or tying up lose ends.
2. The Cutscenes
This one may seem weird. I'm not saying the cutscenes are bad, in fact they're very gorgeous. My problem is that when you're playing the game it runs at a mostly stable 60 ish fps (at least on ps4), but when you get into cutscenes it seriously, not even joking, goes into like 25 fps. Now idk if this was on purpose or not, but it's really jarring when you go from a silky smooth 60fps into an oddly low 25fps, then back into 60fps. That's just me though I'm not sure about everyone else and I got this game much later than release.
Other than that i actually don't really have any problems. This game isn't actually a 60$ worthy game I think because it can get tiresome if you play it too many times for too long. But in short bursts this game is fantastic, at least for those that were fans of the previous Mirror's Edge game. I got the game brand new for 30$, and I think for that price it's totally worth it.
The improvements are most evident in traversing the world, but also apply to combat. Once you learn the melee moves, Faith is a powerhouse. Combat was a real problem in the original, but feels very satisfying here. I would love to see the developers continue to add moves and depth in future games, but I am not disappointed in this one.
Unfortunately, the developers chose not to build on the world and story established by the first game. The rebooted story and characters feel shallow, uninteresting, and predictable. The design of the world is inexplicably more futuristic and utopian, and it unfortunately falls short of the beautiful first game. There are aspects to love, but overall the world is the game's weak point.
The open world is a great aspect of a game focused on traversal, but there are "choke points" throughout that will make you travel the same routes far too many times. Still, I see the open world as an improvement on the original game.
Overall, this is a flawed game whose excellent gameplay makes it a personal favorite. It's not for everyone, but recommended for fans of fun traversal and as an alternative to the mountain of shooters available.
ME:C has completely ret-conned the story from the first game. No longer are you running around a police state; now, all-powerful corporations rule all, and it is their security forces that you fight and evade throughout the game. Also, Faith's sister is no longer a member of the police force; now, you only see her in cutscenes (or do you? no spoilers here). The story and the acting still aren't great, but they're far better than what we got in the first game (you'll never hear Faith utter the words "bad case of the blues" here).
However, you don't play Mirror's Edge for the story, any more than you play the original Super Mario Bros. for its compelling narrative. You're here to run, jump, climb pipes, tightrope across flagpoles, wall run, grapple, and basically master moving around your environment. On this front, ME:C delivers big time. This is easily the best 3-D platformer ever created, and one of the best pure platformers ever, in my opinion; getting from point A to point B as fast as humanly possible, using a variety of tucks, jumps, rolls, and other moves, is flat out addictive. It's easy to get hooked on doing a particular run over and over again, trying to shave the last tenth of a second from your best time.
If you appreciate skill in gaming, you'll love this game. If you like platforming, you'll love this game. If you're a fan of the first game, you will love this game. And, if you love great music, you will really love this game-and the soundtrack as well. Seriously, buy the soundtrack. It's amazing.
Don't let the negative reviews put you off. For thirty bucks, this some of the most fun you can have on your PS4.
