I really love this game and have been playing it quite frequently for a couple of months now. I think everything about it is unique. The graphics are very detailed in some respects and rather crude in others but the overall effect is quite captivating for what this game is trying to capture which is geometry, neon-like colors, spatial perspective, and surface texture. It can quite literally scare the ___ out of me at times with vertigo. This game is all about navigating the angular terrain and, sporadically, combating enemies. At first I found this game incredibly frustrating and it literally took me a solid month of playing to complete it the first time. I had to rely on others' You Tube videos to figure out where to go and how to execute certain moves. Each level had at least two points that I thought I would never get through. But eventually I figured it out and now I can pretty much run through every level at whatever pace I choose with whatever mishaps occurring being due to sloppiness and not anything aggravating. Don't misunderstand, this game might very well frustrate the heck out of you until you solve its peculiarities but once you do I'll bet you'll find it a ton of fun. The story line is actually pretty cogent and the action also quite logical but to be honest I didn't pay attention to either until I got through the game the first time through. Anyway, I have never encountered a game quite like this one and I am very pleased with it (especially since it cost all of $14) although, again, it required a bit of time to understand it. One last thing. I ultimately discovered that one of this game's great gems is that it's fairly open ended; i.e., there are multiple ways of navigating through each level. I started to figure this out from the You Tube videos I watched to get through this the first time (they were different) but imagine my surprise when nothing I watched worked for me and I ultimately stumbled on a completely different approach on my own! I hesitate to call this game "sandbox" in that respect but it is refreshingly unrestricted which means even after you have completed it multiple times there are still fresh routes to take. I would buy it again.

So, my initial foray into non-Portal FPS games was Mirror's Edge. The first week with this game was a never-ending littany of swearwords and e-death brought about by gravity as I attempted to force the main character's digitized body to bend to my will using an old keyboard. Things didn't get much better until such time as I hooked up my logitech rumble-pack USB pad, and 'got the feel' of the interface. Once I did, wow! This game, plot and all, is a delivery system for a 3-D puzzle much like portal, but more focused on actually getting from here to there incrementally, instead of using weird "what if" physics.

At end of day, despite all the Parkour, this really is a puzzle game first and foremost, with a major plot to work through, and rather unfortunately frequent (and frustrating,) combat. The puzzle parts were great, and gave me the same flush of excitement I experienced with Portal and Portal 2. Having said this, there are very arbitrary automatic save points in the game, and given that one sometimes has to cover a lot of dangerous ground between said saves, it's really easy to get frustrated after hitting the pavement at terminal velocity for the umpteenth time in fifteen minutes. This is especially true if you have a series of six or seven jumps between roof-tops you have to perform in quick succession before you're allowed to play on. Worse yet, combat is ridiculously difficult, and upon repetition in major fight scenes, the AI is a little too effective at anticipating your moves, such as they are. I found the actual FPS parts of this game to be the most consistently and pointlessly frustrating. The puzzle aspects were golden, however, and the vistas breathtaking in their fit and finish. This is, much of the time, a beautiful game.

Finally, I should mention the proprietary (expletive self-deleted) inflicted upon the end-user by Nvidia and their property, PhysX. I still don't really know what PhysX does for this game. I have a brand new AMD Radeon HD 6950 2 GB card, which is more than capable of making the game look gorgeous. In fact, after the third stage of the game, which has a nasty frame-rate-per-second problem with the PhysX engine when you're running it on your processor, I started the game over without PhysX effects enabled. I noticed absolutely no differences in gameplay, except that my poor processor wasn't whezing anymore, and the game was prettier than ever, given the huge framerates being pumped out by my GPU.

After some initial adjustment, this was a great game to play. But there were definitely issues that almost made me uninstall and shelve the darned thing before I figured them out. Love the game, hate the implementation!
