Joe Chambers' resume lists some of the classic recordings of the '60s: Wayne Shorter's Adam's Apple, Joe Henderson's Mode for Joe, Freddie Hubbard's Breaking Point. So Chambers is bound to raise a few eyebrows with a version of Michael Jackson's "The Lady in My Life" (featured) on his new Blue Note CD, Mirrors - it's hardly material you'd expect from the drummer who provided the caustic beats on Archie Shepp's Fire Music. "That it is Michael Jackson's tune doesn't mean a thing," retorts Chambers. "When I heard it, I liked it. It had nice changes, good movement. It's hard to get people to stop labeling you, but doing [this song] is one way I tried to achieve that." Chambers is joined in his quest by saxophonist Vincent Herring, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, pianist Mulgrew Miller, and bassist Ira Coleman.
