The story picks up with Jetsam, who has picked up quite a few new tricks under the tutelage of the wizard Seryn. Skiera immediately drops the reader into the action with Jetsam and Seryn attempting to rescue an attacked caravan. From this point on, the story is constantly moving, slowing only to provide some snippets into Seryn's tragic past and catching the reader up on the events that pulled the wizard and the orphan boy, Jetsam, together. In many ways, this volume belongs to Seryn, and there are several emotional scenes that truly bring him to life, as well as allow the reader to connect with him. Of course, Jetsam is not left without a few revelations himself, tying both him and Seryn to a dastardly plot possibly connected to the evil Grimlord.
The entire story flows well, and there is very little filler to slow things down. Mirrors and Mist offers an engrossing and complex plot far beyond that of the first volume, as well as sets up for what promises to be an exciting conclusion in the final book. My only real complaint concerns the abrupt ending. I'm an epic fantasy man, so I am well accustomed to open endings, but Mirrors and Mist's ending offered little to no true resolution to its general story. I love books that leave threads hanging for the next volume, but it's nice to have a little closure at the same time.
Even so, I highly recommend this book to fans of the swords and sorcery fantasy genre, especially if you liked the first book. Now to wait for book 3!
You know, one thing confuses me when I read CM Skiera's work...
Leaves me all out of sorts...
Makes me wonder...
Why isn't this guy on the NYT Best Seller List?
Seriously - I don't like giving away details of the book, so let's just say:
If Brent Weeks had a love child with Rowling....
You'd expect the kid to be able to write books like this after he'd overdosed on The Hobbit.
CM's work is really good. ..lose track of time and stay up hours late on a work night good.
So do yourself a favor...
Buy this book.
Be tired at work the next day.
You'll be glad you did.
CM Skiera has managed to write another spellbinding tale, expanding on the first adventure while also tying in Seryn's past. Not only are we able to see the events unfolding that led to the banishment of magic in Dwim-Halloe, we also learn how the paths of Seryn and Jetsam are woven together through the teachings and loyalty of Jetsam's parents. Interspersing the present with past memories helps keep the story moving forward quickly without feeling as if too much background information is forced on the reader at once.
It's difficult to believe that this is only the author's second book, with well-written and interesting characters and an exciting plot. A mixture of High Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery genres, this story does contain some of the staples, including dragons, wizards, and trolls, though it also introduces creatures unique to the Oxbow Kingdom. The author has created a complex world, giving a deeper understanding to the politics and motives of the characters while still being entertaining. Most importantly, you want to learn more about the people and discover what happens next!
As this is the second book in the trilogy, the ending leads us straight into the adventure waiting in the final volume. I'm already eagerly anticipating the events to come in Book Three!
Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of this book, since he knew how much I loved the first one!
So now hes on a rescue mission this time. He needs to get to Seryn fast. He only has so much time before Seryn is going to be killed. Jetsam needs to come up with a plan, get some backup and hope it all goes well. Otherwise he loses everything and will end up on the run again.
I liked how Jetsam seemed more grown up and I got to learn even more about him. For someone his age he shouldn't have to be dealing with any of this, but he is and takes it all in with a more mature attitude than someone his age should have. More characters are also brought in and each one was built well so we didn't spend much time on wishing we knew more about them. The relationship that Jetsam and Seryn have is great and you can feel why he is trying so hard to save him.
I loved the way the story went. The writing is awesome and its only book 2! The author is worth checking out!
