Product Description
Ben Carson (KIEFER SUTHERLAND) has seen better days. It's been nearly a year since the volatile detective was suspended from the NYPD for fatally shooting another undercover officer, an accident that not only cost him his job, but fueled the alcoholism and anger that has alienated his wife and kids and left him crashing on his sister's couch in Queens. Desperate to pull his life together and reconnect with his family, Carson takes a job as a night watchman at the burned-out ruins of the Mayflower department store. What once was a symbol of prosperity and grandeur now sits decaying in the darkness like a rotting ghost ship, destroyed by a massive fire that devoured numerous innocent lives. As Carson patrols the eerie, charred remains of the store, he begins to notice something sinister about the ornate mirrors that adorn the Mayflower walls. Reflected in the gigantic shimmering glass are horrific images that stun Carson. Beyond projecting gruesome images of the past, the mirrors appear to be manipulating reality as well. When Carson sees his own reflection being tortured, he suffers the physical effects of his fractured visions. Suddenly the troubled ex-cop finds himself battling his personal demons and the ones that have hijacked his reflection, tormenting him with convulsions, spontaneous bleeding and near suffocation. His sympathetic but skeptical sister Angela (AMY SMART) dismisses these bizarre "nightmares" as a consequence of his stress and guilt over the accidental shooting, but Carson's estranged wife Amy (PAULA PATTON), a no-nonsense NYPD medical examiner, is less forgiving. Her husband's increasingly erratic behavior frightens her, pushing his family farther away - and, she fears, it's putting their children in danger. But a much deadlier threat looms, trapped within the mirrors and reflective surfaces that pervade their everyday life. As Carson investigates the mysterious disappearance of a Mayflower security guard and its possible connection to his ghastly visions, he realizes that a malevolent, otherworldly force is using reflections as a gateway to terrorize him and his family. If he has any hope of saving his wife and children from a horrifying death, Carson must somehow uncover the truth behind the mirrors - and convince Amy to help him battle the greatest evil he has ever faced.

Kiefer Sutherland anchors this supernatural thriller from Hills Have Eyes (2006) director Alexandra Aja about an abandoned building that harbors vengeful spirits. Sutherland brings a degree of his 24 intensity to his role as a disgraced police detective working a security detail at a derelict building. A package from a former security guard--who commits suicide in the film’s eerie opening moments--alerts Sutherland to the building’s tragic past, as well as to the presence of dark forces with the ability to harm the living; once aware of their presence, Sutherland and his family become their next target. Mirrors works best in its first third, where Joseph Nemec’s production design delivers maximum chills. Where the film stumbles is its rush to provide a slam-bang conclusion filled with CGI and other effects, resulting in an unsatisfying, open-ended conclusion that does much to dispel the film’s impressively Gothic atmosphere. The unrated DVD presentation differs from the theatrical cut by mere seconds, and the alternate ending included among the battery of deleted scenes is a more satisfying conclusion than the one used in the film. --Paul Gaita

Decent special effects.
Good character development (though Jason Flemying is sort of tossed in awkwardly, he still delivers)
Ok twist ending
Cons: Hollywood formula strictly followed.
Uses a monastery as a cloister and calls it a convent. (Use ALL THE CATHOLICS!) LOL
Poor or no chemistry between the actors.
SPOILER ALERT!! Doesn't even try to explain why the day guard is utterly unaffected.
The concept behind it is interesting, but when you finally find out what's going in, you might find yourself scratching your head, wondering how it even slightly makes sense. I understand suspending belief for the sake of entertainment, but I did not find this entertaining. The highlight of the movie for me was watching the cop's reflection smile and take a shot at him.
Final verdict: If you're into gore, outrageous plots and really pushing the limits, this might be for you. If you're like me--a horror fan just trying to find another movie to enjoy--then I suggest saving the money. I spent one cent on this movie, plus three dollars shipping, and I STILL want my money back. I'm selling it as soon as possible.
The I said what the heck and bought it. I was surprised the version I'd seen was NOT the unrated version. I'll be honest the bath tub scene and the sheer scariness and brutality of it was enough to get me to purchase this dvd and for that I am not dissapointed, despite several flaw in both the script, the story and the effects. The thing that bothers me the most is this movie had the potential to be truly terrifying. From the trailer I saw it had potential written all over it and things got kinda fumbled on the potential part but i still an entertaining film thanks to Keifer and Amy Smart.
If you had gotten to know his sister more, and really like her, perhaps she coudlve even had a bigger part? then the bathtub scene would have been that much more tramatic and gruesome and have garnered Keifer a bit more sympathy from us movie watchers. There's no reason at all togo with the theatrical version...Pity...
Kiefer Sutherland is one of my favorite actors (like father like son), although I think Kiefer is actually an even better actor than his father Donald.
This movie really succeeds in conveying a seriously HAUNTED and SPINE CHILLING atmosphere.
Plot development is kind of weird, in fact it's kind of over the top (not too much) but it does work.
It's hardly the most original of premises but then again what is, seriously, everybody copies everybody else to some degree or another, but the psychological and terrifying atmospheric elements are so well done.

The film looks very good and the old, dark, burnt out department store with its eerie mannequins and semi-melted statuettes is very eerie.
This is an entertaining hour abd a half's viewing and kudos to the writers for the ending. It eschews the normal happy Hollywood ending for something much darker which i enjoyed. (I have seen a similar ending once, but can't recall which film it was. Any ideas anyone?)
Also nice to see Amy Smart revealing her assets, but her CGI death is pretty bad.
This is a 3.5 star film imo ,,,,nice atmosphere, nice filming, nice ending, bad CGI.
Kiefer Sutherland plays a watchman in an abandoned department store, wandering around the old fire-damaged building with a torch. He starts to see things in the mirrors, and at first thinks that he has an overactive imagination. Things move on rapidly from there, and the film ends with a good twist. Atmospheric and well-acted, this is a very entertaining horror movie.
For those who don't know it, essentially we have here a haunted ruined department store. I know that must sound a bit corny, but it really does work. Top marks to the set designers: the burnt-out store with its ash-strewn floors and mirrors on every wall is fantastic. Kiefer Sutherland acquits himself well too in the lead role.
Extras are deleted and alternate scenes (including a revised ending) and an excellent "Making Of". It's always pretty amazing to see the amount of work which goes into making even perfectly ordinary movies. Overall, strongly recommended.
The flick's main failure is the lack of gore; this fact is all the more disappointing, because the gruesome death of a minor character during the first minutes creates hope for the rest of the movie. Moreover, the afore praised thrill could have been written with more detail and shock effect. In this respect I even wonder, why the film didn't get a 15 rating.
(SPOILER): A final setback: the end of the story features a startling plot featuring a released demon. The appearance of the devilish creature doesn't really fit into the narrative and establishes a rather ackward logical gap.
However: Mirrors is a great experience, because it is clever. You feel and see the effort which was put into creating a coherent story, set within a supernatural world. Highly recommended for people who shy away from extreme horror franchises like "SAW", "Hostel" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".
