Book: The Misadventures of Doc and Dirk
Series: That Darn Muse Vol 1
Author: Dan Skinner
Publisher: Amazon Digital
Genre: Coming of Age
Rated: Mature M/M
For those who have been following Dan Skinner on Facebook, Dirk-isms are a part of our life. So our dynamic-duo have decided to start from the beginning, and put this relationship to pen and ink.
In a good portion of Dan Skinner’s books, he has shared his life as a young gay man making his life an open book. We all read Dan putting his life into the pages he wrote, pouring out his heart and soul, telling us about being gay in the Bible belt, where they beat the gay out of you. After finally getting out, he went from frying pan into fire with a relationship that also kept on giving (all bad)
So it makes the readers and friends who have followed Da all these years, to sit back with Doc and his muse Dirk and learn about this relationship that brings Dan so much joy. This short book introduces us to Dirk, how they both met, and why the meeting was so important to them both. The fact that this young gay man is so open about himself I think was the lure for Dan as his life at that age had been so much different.
We get to meet Dirk’s mother, a lawyer, giving unconditional love to this quirky young man and from what I see, great respect for Dan as well. She knows Dan is seeing the goodness in her son and guiding him as an older gay man….(sorry Dan) Must also mention Dirk’s Mom has honored us with some words of wisdom too.
If you want a treat, of an auto biographical interlude of good fun, than this first short would be right up your alley. If you haven’t friended Dan Skinner yet on Facebook you are missing something as well.
Cannot wait till Volume two…

with dan skinner, there is always some of dan in everything he writes, autiobiographical in many cases, though one cannot assume that all he writes he actually experienced. he is a private man. his latest novel Xperiment has caused a lot of controversy, because it is a rodomontade against the so called religious right and their hypocrisy. this is an idee fixe of dan's writing. he writes beautifully, however, no matter what he is writing about. even Xperiment--which frankly has some passages which are VERY hard to read, b/c of content, not syle, is beautifully crafted.
his latest work, 'the misadventures of doc and dirk v. 1 is the most autobiographical of all. for those who follow dan on facebook, one is quite aware of a fellow named dirk, who came into his life a few years ago and turned things topsy turvy, to some degree. we are treated to a more or less continual stream of 'dirkisms,' often dialogues with his mother, or with dan. however, dan has been careful to keep a theater curtain over dirk. now he has raised that curtain, but has left a scrim curtain. we get to know a lot about dirk in this first installment, and about his mother, and his childhood and adolescence. there is an incandescence to this story, and skinner reaches new heights of skill, because this is--dirk is--something and someone he truly cares about and loves, and who has returned that love, at a time when dan most needed it.
like dickens, that scamp skinner is spinning this tale out in serial form. after all the segments are published, I believe I am correct in saying that a paperback will be published. and sometime in the future, and I have no idea when that will be, the scrim curtain will be raised and we will be able to see dirk as dirk. like dan, dirk loves photography, and is also studying film making. if he plays his cards right, I may allow him to film one (at least) of my novels. ha!
I recommend this venture to those who love a good story, told well, with real heart, and a big glob of testosterone thrown in for good measure.
The blurb tells you everything you need to know about this book. In two episodes and an intermezzo filled with ‘Random Dirkisms’ we are told the story of Dirk and Dan meeting, Dirk becoming Dan’s apprentice, and the early months of their acquaintance and getting to know each other.
This is a feel good read, and the fact that these events and conversations really took place only makes that feel good factor skyrocket. These words will either make you smile or laugh out loud. It is impossible not to marvel at the wonder that is Dirk. Clever, quick, and to the point, he’s never lost for a smart comeback. And I love what I’ve seen of Dirk’s mother so far. It is so refreshing to read about a mother – son relationship that actually works, where the two individuals involved get each other, bounce off each other, and obviously trust each other deeply.
This is a short read, our opportunity to get to know Dan and Dirk beyond the glimpses we get on social media, and as such it is a treasure. I’m delighted it also ‘just’ the start of the tale. More books are coming and the second one already has a title – That Darn Muse, Volume Two: Daddy and the Rent Boy & A-MUSE-ING – and should be coming soon. For me personally it can’t come soon enough.
