One of the best of his plays — and one of the greatest of all comedies — is The Misanthrope, first performed in 1666, when the King of France himself had assumed patronage of Molière's company, and the actor/playwright was at the height of his career.
Spotlighting the absurdities of social and literary pretension, The Misanthrope shows us a man who is quick to criticize the hypocrisies, inconsistencies and faults of others, yet remains blind to his own. As "the misanthrope" grows more and more irritable with others, the play becomes more and more entertaining, even as a happy ending for the hero seems less and less likely.

Timeless Comedy

[This review is for the Dover Thrift Edition, based on the 1876 Henri Van Laun translation.]

Whenever one comes across comedy from a century or more ago, the "comedy" part seems lost as it belongs too, much to a different era.

Not so with Moliere's "The Misanthrope". Although written some 350 years ago, it is a funny and clever today as ever (actually, much cleverer today, given the state of today's comedy in comparison).

The key is that the characters and situations presented are as common today as in 17th century France. The hypocrites, the sycophants, the two-faced, the flirts, and ofcourse the perpetually morally outraged.

It is a rather short play, but immensely funny and well worth the read (the exchange between Alceste and Orontes on the latter's sonnet are hilarious!).

My favorite text series of all time is Larousse's Petits Classiques. They are what got me into reading French theater because the texts are aesthetically pleasing, well organized, full of information for novice readers, but still useful for someone in graduate school! I'm so glad I found this version online for a reasonable price to add to my collection. Plus, it's Moliere at his finest!

Great product for a low low price

As a French student I fnd it very helpful that I am able to download many French texts for free or for a lvery low pric through Amazon Kindle. I still have the hard copy of the books, but it is not always convenient to carry the books around, so the Kindle downloads are invaluable. Having a busy schedule, the downloads allow me to read wherever I am when I am away from home. I am able to not waste any time when it becomes available because the texts are literally at my fingertips. Great Resource!

It's lovely. The beauty of Alexandrine verses! Beautiful Especially it you have been able to see the text come alive through great actors. Try watching "Alceste à bicylette" (Cycling with Molière) and you won't be able to drop it.
