Mischief Maker: A Norse Mythology Contemporary Fantasy (Loki Redeemed Book 1) Kindle Edition
From the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim comes an epic journey of Loki’s redemption. Where does a misunderstood Norse god hide a thousand years after Ragnarok? In the suburbs, of course. Loki is spending his days eking out a living as a stage magician when not one, but two attempts on his life force him to come out of exile.
Loki and his constant companion, Muninn the raven, return to the Nine Realms and Asgard. After he recovers his lost magic, Loki is forced to come to terms with what it means to be a god in modern times. Are the Aesir truly divine, or just people with extraordinary abilities? Loki certainly doesn’t feel very godly.
As he wanders the fabled lands of the elves, dwarves, and giants, Loki finds new friends and old enemies. Behind the attempts on his life is the impending threat of a second Ragnarok. The victors write history, and the surviving gods of Asgard painted Loki as the villain. He now has a shot at redemption, and a chance to stop Thor from committing genocide. Can motorcycles and guns defeat swords and sorcery?
Dive into this fresh take on Norse mythology and join the reluctant hero, Loki, as he takes on Thor to save the Nine Realms.
Mischief Maker could be one of the best stories you read this year. Try it today.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Stunning and Delightful! Bruce's first foray into fiction is fascinating. And I thought I knew all there was to know about Norse Mythology ... Harold "Wisconsin" Johnson, Former VP of Publishing for TSR, Inc.
"Mischief Maker offers readers a clever, well-drawn take on the character of Loki and a compelling story of old grudges and older gods. From the first sentence, an entertaining and compulsively readable novel." James Lowder, author of Prince of Lies and Knight of the Black Rose
Mischief Maker puts the reader on the road to adventure with a pair of unlikely, but likable rogues. Hold on tight as Lowell, the magician with a past, and Manny (don't call him a sidekick) unravel a mystery built into the ancient foundations of a mythology you thought you knew. It felt like I was once again back in the car with two princes of Amber as they raced through shadow to upset their family's Machiavellian schemes. Jennell Jaquays, Renowned RPG adventure designer and artist
Mischief Maker is an epic journey across Norse mythology, but this saga is reimagined in ways that inject fresh, modern delights into a familiar subject. Steven Winter, Renowned RPG Writer
A refreshing take on Norse mythology-made-modern. Grand adventure, complex characters, and the perfect dose of mischief. Highly recommended! Jean Rabe, USA Today bestselling fantasy author

About the author

I'm a midwest guy born and bred. At least I thought I was until I moved to the east coast. Now I'm a bit of both. I love different things about each of those two areas of the country. Professionally, each contributed something different to my career path.
I started out working for TSR, Inc. in Wisconsin. I did two tours of duty there, as a programmer for a bit, but primarily as a writer and game designer. I wrote all kinds of things from Dungeons & Dragons materials, Marvel Superheroes products, Gamma World supplements, and board games. I had the great honor of turning Tracy Hickman's Ravenloft adventure into a campaign setting.
Eventually, I left the halls of TSR, Inc. for the green, Maryland pastures of Bethesda Softworks, maker of video games. I worked on Elder Scrolls games and Fallout games. I had a second great honor of being the lead designer on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Throughout all of this, I've had a love of fantasy and science fiction, in books, movies, and games.

Why four stars? Because it's lucid, well-crafted, inventive, and at the heart of it, a good story. The road to hell is paved in good intentions. It's actually paved with them. There were a few other miscues such as that. A few other pretty glaring gaffes. Esme appearing where she did at the climax is questionable for sure. Nobody noticed her? Baldr is argr and so is Loki? Why then does Loki bed down so frequently with Yvla? That's questionable for sure. Thor has the IQ of a potato, a bit of a stretch even for the Thor of mythology. Frigg asking Loki why doesn't he kill her? Well, because she can best him, that's why. Loki's threat to Frigg at the end was overdone. It's things like this, some of them anyway, that make a book have talking points and that's part of what a good book does, gives its readers things to debate and discuss.
I enjoy books about myths re-told and the old Norse pantheon is my favorite, because more than any other pantheon, the Gods are not infallible, unknowable beings; They live, they love, they fight, and they die, just as we do. They are us and to know them is to know ourselves. That happens to be a theme of this book.
I felt a bit of trepidation when I saw that the book was written in a first person perspective. In other books about Norse myths Loki's motivations usually stay ambiguous and mysterious. We never never really get to know the full extent of why he does what he does. Is it possible to get inside the head of the God of Mischief, Chaos Incarnate? If it is possible, would I really want to? My worries did not last long. Nesmith does a nice job at a first person perspective. I found myself thinking: "I feel you, man," quite a few times, especially when modern day, Midgard Loki recollects his distant past. I'm well into middle age and while I am not a centuries old pseudo-deity, parts of my own past feel like lifetimes ago. Nesmith's Midgard Loki is relatable.
With the deepest respect to Mr. Nesmith's editor, I did encounter several small grammar mistakes in the book. This is not a dealbreaker to find the book enjoyable, but it is very distracting from the story itself. There is one continuity error in chapter 29, The Lock Box, that made my eye twitch. When Loki goes in search of food at Sviarr's house, a paragraph opens with: "The kitchen was simple. I found some unidentifiable smoked meat and a passable ale." The paragraph ends with: "I didn't find a bed or a kitchen..." Did Sviarr have a kitchen or not? Perhaps I should have just rolled with that as part of a story about Mischief, but I admit I cringed. Perhaps this can be fixed if there is another printing.
Despite my small critiques, I really enjoyed the story, and as someone who has shared my life with a bird for the past eighteen years, the ending gave me a good chuckle of recognition. I am left with a few questions at the conclusion (but that is not a necessarily a bad thing); in particular I wonder about Leagjarn. It is usually considered bad form to mention a gun in Act I and not have it go off by Act II. Why mention Loki's weapon, locked in a box with magical locks that he literally sheds blood, spit and tears over, to just let that hang in the ether by the end of the book? Perhaps because this book is only Act I of a larger story; I sure hope that is the case!

This book did just that and showed no one is either just good or bad and even gods make mistakes.
A great read which doesn’t get lost down the hole of too many details into mythology.
My son aged 11 has also read it and really enjoyed it!
