The Misco self watering planters are top of the line, their old design was even better, without the lip on the planter, I wish both designs were available, with these planters you can water and the plants will be ok for about 4 days, the roots love the ventilation design, I have been using these planters for years, they are durable and strong, this is a product I will strongly recommend, great product.

Great product, I've been using these pots to grow both moisture-loving and drier plants on my balcony, and they've never looked happier.

For the plants that like moist soil, I use these pots normally. After an adjustment time watering from the top, a wicking effect is created that draws the water up from the reservoir, and as long as you keep the reservoir semi-full, you don't have to worry about watering. The vents are great for aeration as well as making sure the roots aren't sitting in old water

For plants that want dry soil like succulents and palms, I fill the bottom X-shape of the pot normally used for wicking with gravel. I remove the plastic reservoir at the bottom of the pot, and the vents at the bottom give it great drainage and soil aeration. Although it loses its self-watering function, the drainage is fantastic, and I can be sure that I'm not overwatering my plants.

I'd also make note of the color of the pot you're buying if your plant is going to be out in the sun. Latte is great for full sun since it's white and keeps the pot from getting too hot, and I would not use the bronze color pots since they're fairly dark and can overheat easily.

Great pots, I would highly recommend.

This is quite possibly my favorite planter. The durable plastic makes for less watering (great for trips) and allows for lightweight moving. The reservoir, my favorite part of the planter, is attached giving the planter a clean look and allows for excellent aeration and watering. Wished Misco made more of these planters in various colors/styles.

Bought my first Misco planter @ Walmart, but when I went back for another, they weren't carrying them. I went directly to Amazon and found the planter. The planter is attractive, heavy duty, and has a clever watering opening at the base. Inside, the base has a raised, slotted bottom which allows proper drainage and aeration. Well designed, well made, I am very happy with it and will buy another without hesitation.

I have a small variation of an umbrella plant. It is a relatively tropical one requiring moist soil, and it was very difficult to keep properly watered in a typical planter. It started as a bonsai, so I initially moved it to a small, nested self-watering planter. It flourished there, to the point where it was over a foot tall from the soil, so I needed a larger pot.

Along comes the Misco self-watering planter. This pot is perfect for my finicky former-bonsai-now-not-so-little umbrella plant. The monstrous foliage now grows close to 2' tall, and continues to sprout healthily from the top. What was once a bonsai is now nearly a floor plant.

My routine is simple; I completely fill the bottom of the planter 2x a week. I'll often water a little extra either after the plant has drunk a bit or on the top of the soil, since mine really likes to stay hydrated. The planter does a good job, aside from the fact that I have to tilt it to fill the bottom part, and sometimes it will leak out of the seam that connects the bottom part to the main part. It's a minor complaint that I could easily fix with a dedicated watering can, as recommended by other reviewers, but it doesn't bother me that much.

The pot is durable, though I wouldn't expect it to withstand excessive accidental kicks from being on the floor. I'd expect it to withstand standard accidental foot encounters just fine.

The pot is also fairly light, as it is made of plastic and not a ceramic or terracotta. It allows for much easier moving of the plant.

I'm so glad to have found these containers. They work WONDERFULLY; right now I have tomatoes in some. The tomatoes are mulched and even when it's sunny outside I only have to refill the water every three to four days, and every five to six days when it's been cloudier, and the soil is moist all the way to the top! These pots also make it very easy to water and fertilize from the bottom so the leaves do not get wet. I was glad to find these because they wick water directly, instead of relying on a cloth wick which doesn't tend to work well. They don't leak at all except from the large drainage hole, which you *want* it to drain from; it rained a ton here in SoCal recently, which was unusual, but the soil in these remained at the perfect level of moisture since the excess water just drained out.

The price is good, too (we have prime so we get free shipping); we made a few self-watering containers ourselves and the materials costed about as much, they didn't work quite as well as these, and the fun of making one wore off after the first one. Now I would only bother to make my own if I needed a very large one.

I keep these permanently on my wish list and plan to buy many more sizes, plus the self-watering window boxes.
