I have read the full unabridged version of Les Miserables twice, led a discussion on it with my book club (highest score ever), seen it live on stage twice, watched the 10th Anniversary edition of the stage production and listened to the soundtrack of this edition more times than I can count, and watched the 2012 movie version a week before listening to this audio book.
This audio book will be proudly added to my collection of all things Les Miserables!
What a wonderful three hour abridgment that hits all the important elements of mercy and redemption in this story! It is the perfect way to introduce someone to this timeless message. It is also sensitive to a younger audience in that some of the "grittier" elements have been toned down (Fantine really WAS a prostitute in the book, but this is not emphasized in this abridgment making it appropriate for younger listeners.)
The acting is SUPERB. Brian Blessed is a seasoned actor that portrays Jean Valjean wonderfully.
The musical score is also beautiful. It will move you much like the music from the musical version does. I could not stop listening to this dramatization!
Five stars for this fine production that has been re-released to coincide with the release of the 2012 film.
NOTE: Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this audio book in exchange for an unbiased review.
It took about a chapter for them to be completely sucked in. Focus on the Family Radio Theatre does a fabulous job. As always.
I was familiar with the storyline, but I have never actually read the book, or seen any of the myriad productions of it. It seemed that this production stayed fairly true to the basic plotline. Minus most of the extra non-plot discussions about the sewers of Paris or the Battle of Waterloo. From reading a reasonably detailed plot synopsis, I noticed a few differences between this production and the original story. Obviously, though, to condense an enormous novel into less than three hours of audio, you are going to have to make some changes.
The cast is fantastic and the music and sound effects enhance the story. This production convinced me to seriously start reading the book again, and it also got my husband to put one of the film versions on hold at the library.
I highly, highly recommend this production, especially if you want to introduce the story to kids.
Disclaimer: I received this production for free from Tyndale House Publishers. No other compensation was received. The fact that I received a complimentary product does not guarantee a favorable review.
i have heard everything Les Mis from the BBC audio presentation to Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater to Ronald Coleman and the Lux radio theater of the air. This production has a stronger heart. It also seems like something a family can listen to together without any family member being talked down to.
Brian Blessed makes the role of Jean Veljean with powerfulness with passion. Leo (Rumpole)McKern is M. Gillermond with a rye sense of character stealing. Geoffrey Palmer makes Javert something to enjoy.
What makes this interesting is the direction by Philip Glsasborow. He paces the action woth great vocal talent
This is true family entertainment at its best

FOTF Radio Theater dramas are top notch. For a massive book like Le Miserables it obviously has to be abridged, but still excellent stuff.Published 1 month ago by Marcus Virtus
Fantastic dramatization of Les Mis. I like it better than the book and the musical combined. It focuses on the central narratives and has a great score. Read morePublished 3 months ago by magshep
This is an amazing story, and the cast is fantastic. I don't know how accurate it is when it comes to the original story, but this is a wonderful full-cast story to listen to. Read morePublished 8 months ago by Zéva Tayler
