About the Author

The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo s literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola. --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Review

"Hugo's genius was for the creation of simple and recognizable myth. The huge success of "Les Miserables "as a didactic work on behalf of the poor and oppressed is due to his poetic and myth-enlarged view of human nature." V. S. Pritchett

"It was Tolstoy who vindicated [Hugo's] early ambition by judging "Les Miserables "one of the world's great novels, if not the greatest [His] ability to present the extremes of experience 'as they are' is, in the end, Hugo's great gift." From the Introduction by Peter Washington" --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

I got this copy because I wanted a copy of the Hapgood translation in print that was unabridged, and in print. Being unable to find a hardcover with those criteria, I settled for this one.

What a pleasant surprise.

What I actually thought was a paperback was really a "flexiback." I am starting to see more large books being printed in this medium, and it is really neat. It is the best of both worlds really. This cover actually feels like faux leather - surely not cardboard - and it has a matte feel to it that gives a nice amount of grip for holding this big book. The words on the front and the back are actually embossed into the covers, which makes it look quite nice. The pages are of a perfect thickness for the size of this book. They are not too thin, but they are not thick. And also, and most importantly, the book is quite thick - it is genuinely unabridged.

This is one of my favorite books on my shelf. I am really glad I bought it, and at ~$10, it's a magnificent value. I definitely recommend it.

I never thought on reading Les Miserables. I decided to do so quite some months ago. I'm glad I did. Most of Victor Hugo's reflections are still important and relevant for our days. Before watching the movie or going to the musical, do yourself a favor and read this one out. It is long but it is worth it.

My only problem with this book was with the large amount of text in French, without footnotes or any other way, outside of sitting with a French/English dictionary to understand the meaning. It would have been nice if they had linked the French words and phrases, which are plentiful, with a built in dictionary just as they did for the English words. I had the same problem with War and Peace, by Tolstoy. The aristocracy in Russia used French most of the time and it was very difficult to get the gist of what was being said. Otherwise, I wish I had read this years ago. Victor Hugo's great novel, some call it the greatest novel of all time, would easily be a good choice if one were stranded on a desert island and could only take one book... for me, this would be it!!!

Noticing that this book was "Supposedly" unabridged, I purchased it, only to find that the translation was a mess. There are notable modifications in the translation, the style has been notably changed in a number of places, and the book is too short to be unabridged. A better edition is The Works of Victor Hugo (with active table of contents), translated by Charles Wilbour. It offers a far better edition of Les Miserables, in addition to a number of other famous works by Hugo, for only 1 dollar more.

As a point of reference, I typically read fiction at a pace of roughly 30 pages per hour (not a fast reader). This work consumed 80 hours, roughly a month of reading for me. The flowery writing style prevalent in so many 19th century writers is one factor, but there is also much to be considered in the themes presented by the author. I reread many passages to make certain that I fully understood the ideas that were being presented, before moving forward. In short, this is not an easy read. There are passages that are beautifully composed, and there are others where the reader must skim the text to advance. In the case of the later, these passages are few, but so exasperating (the listing of street names is one example). As I finished up, I recall coming away with the feeling that I was glad to have read this... the time spent was nothing.

at 0.99 this edition was the cheapest one i could find but the real bummer was that it lacked a table of contents which made navigating the unwieldy 1000 plus pages a bit tough

Les Miserables is without a doubt my favorite book. There is something for everyone. It tells essentially the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean living his life by following the word of God, despite crippling adversity. The story has so much more though, it contains first love, unrequited love, The Battle of Waterloo, anger about the oppression of the people by government, and shows all class of people. This is no fairy tale and in many ways is heart- tugging and very moving. For those who love the musical, it is not an exact match and takes a certain about of determination to read through. In book form it runs into more than 1200 pages, but the story is worth it.
