As far as the tracker goes, it is definitely an improvement over the Shine 1. We have seen more consistent results when syncing to an iPhone and the data appears to be as good or better than what the Shine 1 gathered. Really like the multi-colored LEDs as well. Overall, a nice improvement and advancement to the Shine line of trackers.
UPDATE: 2.25.16 - Band is still working great. ZERO pop-outs.
UPDATE: 3.07.16 - Shine 2 has popped out one time, as a result of getting caught on some clothing. Other than that, no issues.
UPDATE: 3.09.16 - Added back photos. I guess Amazon strips out the original photos when you edit a review. Good to know!
I took it to a rave.
And to my surprise and delight, the device DID NOT fall out of the wristband, despite the fact that I was dancing and waving my arms around like a maniac and spinning glow sticks on strings for about 6 hours straight. The only potential loss I had for the night was when the string on one of my glowsticks caught the clasp and unbuttoned the wristband (my fault). I caught it before it hit the ground, put it back on, and continued with my lightshows and dancing for the rest of the night with absolutely no problems at all.
The next day I took it to the pool at my gym. I already trusted the device to be waterproof like my previous two Flashes, but I wanted to be sure that I could swim with it without it falling off. I did my normal 80 laps in the pool without a single issue.
What I like about the device:
The Tracking - Yes I know the speedo shine does better on tracking my swimming progress, but this device satisfies my need to see my general progress quite well. I really like how this device shows you how much progress you've continued to make after you achieve your initial goal, something my Flashes did not do.
The Capacitive Touch - It is so easy to make this device light up and check your progress. It was easy with the Flash as well, but I always felt like I was pressing it into my skin when I would check it. The Shine 2 eliminates that with just a nice, light tap.
The Bluetooth Sync - The Shine 2 syncs with the app on my smartphone very quickly and feels like it maintains a more stable connection than my Flashes did. And the blue whirlpool syncing lights look cool too.
The Overall Design - As usual with Misfit, the Shine 2 is very lightweight, though I find this one to be more comfortable to wear than my Flashes. The Wristband snaps on more easily, and despite adding an additional piece to the wristband to support the device, it doesn't make the device itself feel bulky at all.
The Smart Alerts and Notifications - I liked how the Shine 2 reminded me to get up and move around a bit while I was binge watching netflix after such an intense weekend. I really don't want to become a couch potato again. Additionally, I'm going to be using the text and call notifications to help keep my phone in my pocket rather than on my desk while I'm at the office.
What I think could be better:
Activity Tagging - I wish I could activate an activity (like swimming) before I begin my workout rather than having to go back to the app and manually change it. This was something that I really liked about my Flash as it helped me keep a more accurate eye on my progress without having to check it on my smartphone. I'm using an Android Smartphone, so the feature may exist if you're using an iPhone, but I can't say for sure.
Ultimately, the Shine 2 was a great upgrade from my Flashes, and I'm happy to see that Misfit was able to solve the wristband problem. It's a great tracker for people trying to keep an eye on their general progress throughout the day.
I was pretty happy with this item, but am now getting more and more frustrated with it. My watch and my app don't seem to agree on the amount of walking I've done. My goal is set to 1000 points. My watch will tell me I've completed my goal twice and then some. However when I log into my app it will say I only have 200 points and have not met my goal for the day. Underneath my stats it will let me know I've walked six miles. Other days I walk only four miles and it says I've tripled my goal for the day. Since not many people have a misfit I compete with myself and try for longer and longer streaks. Unfortunately the fact that this doesn't accurately sync or store information ruins this for me. When I have a great day, but the app thinks I've only completed 20% of my goal it ruins my streak and makes me question the accuracy of every other day.
I contacted misfit asking about their app, and was asked to send my serial number and a bunch of other info. I sent it to them, and repeated my questions and all I got was a generic email directing me to a forum with a bunch of other confused people on topics that had nothing to do with my inquiry. I spent hours reading through the site I was sent to trying to find an answer, and when I still couldn't find anything I again emailed the company. I really wanted this product to work! The company never responded, and I'm a little put off by their blatant disregard. I paid $100 bucks for this thing, and I just want it to work properly. They don't seem to care once they've got the money in their pocket, and worse, they don't even care enough to pretend they're worried about it.
So far this works well and is very accurate. I love the misfit family, and I get lots and lots of compliments every time I wear my shine whether on my wrist or my necklace. I love that the display is easy to understand and I love the new features that the shine 2 has over the original shine. However a lot of the new features don't work with my Shine because I have a Windows phone. I wish that updates had been made to the app as well as the the misfit device itself. Shine 2 costs about 30% more than the original design because of these extra features, so why are the features not available across every platform?
Other than that, no complaints.
