About the Startup

Describe your product in 3 words.

Always On Wearable

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Misfit was built on the idea that elegant design and rich, transformational experiences should be available to everyone. This is why we are continuing to push past activity tracking and technology to ask, "How can we integrate into the lives of people that seek change?" Not simply as a technological solution, but as a reason to believe that change is possible.

What makes your product special?

"Always On" speaks to our commitment to an effortless, uninterrupted experience. Our Vision is to completely do away with the interference of removing a wearable, in that it's inconvenient and leads to poor data. Shine 2 was designed with this insight at its core. It’s a powerful fitness tracker—beautiful, durable, waterproof, without need of charging, and as much for a night out as for a workout. Shine 2 integrates perfectly into your lifestyle without interruption. The only time you need to take it off is when you want to.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

Working with extremely smart and motivated people that have collectively transformed the company into what it is today. We are extremely proud of our tight-knit team and everything that we have accomplished together.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good fitness tracker with a few horrendous issues
    By Brent M. on November 9, 2015
I have been using my Misfit Shine 2 for nearly 2 weeks now (I received an early release as an existing Shine user). The Shine 2 is actually the best fitness tracker I have used in a while (I have owned and used the Jawbone UP, Jawbone UP24, Jawbone UP 2, Fitbit Flex, Fitbit Force, Fitbit Charge HR, and Misfit Shine over the past few years), however its Sports Band wristband and plastic clip are so bad that simply wearing the Shine 2 around the house can lead to losing a $99 device! This wouldn't be an issue except that (at the time of writing this review) Misfit does not offer any other band options. Since any level of activity can lead to loss of the device (I have had mine fall off while working in the yard, getting out of my car, toasting at a bar, jogging, and driving so far), any benefits from the device are nullified in my eyes. While the Shine 2 itself is a nice bump over the original, I cannot possibly recommend this product to anyone. My findings are below:

DESIGN: The design of the Shine 2 is what drew me to it originally. The face is very slightly larger, but not too noticeably. The inclusion of color LEDs is a definite bonus as it makes the face easier to read when in watch mode and also just makes the Shine 2 a little more attractive. I also found that the LEDs on the Shine 2 are marginally easier to read in daylight than the LEDs on the original Shine, but only just.

ACTIVITY TRACKING: As soon as I started using the Shine 2, I noticed that my points / steps started going down. Every day, I walk the same path to visit my girlfriend. The path is 3.1 miles each way. In the past, a round trip would easily put me over my 1000 point goal for the day. Since using the Shine 2, I have noticed that a round trip only puts me at about 80%-90% of my goal. The contrast becomes even more distinct when I walk next to someone who has a Shine. I have found that my girlfriend's Shine puts her at about 1.5x the activity of my Shine 2 even when we have spent the whole day together. Luckily, this is most likely just a firmware issue. The Shine 2 has an accelerometer and magnetometer, so it's possible that the software that converts the output from these devices into steps and points just needs to be tweaked. I'm looking forward to better tracking in the future with a firmware update. It is also possible that the Shine 2 is the more accurate of the 2 devices (I have never tested the Shine and Shine 2 on a treadmill to see exactly how well they identify 1 mile of walking) and I have just become accustomed to the points granted by my gen 1 Shine.

The one nice thing is that the Shine 2 gives you the ability to see how far you have progressed beyond your goal (up to 3x your goal) where the Shine only told you your progress up until meeting your goal.

SPORTS BAND: This is the most worthless wristband I have ever seen on a fitness tracker. The original Shine had a tendency to pop out of the wristband once in a while, but nothing too terrible. Since moving to the Shine 2, it has been constant. I had the Shine 2 pop out of the wristband more than 10 times in the first week of use. Unfortunately, the Shine 2 has a small piece of plastic behind the device itself (required to keep it from falling out of the band as soon as you put it on) which means that you won't be able to feel if it falls out! To make matters worse, the wristband itself would also pop off from time to time implying a change to the clasp. Less than a week in, I had the Shine 2 pop out of the wristband while I was getting out of the car. I was lucky enough to find it intact under my car later that afternoon, but the fact that getting out of a car could cause it to pop out is absurd. I would have understood if the band fell off while I was playing rugby or hockey - something full-contact, but the Shine 2 came off from things like toasting at a bar, putting on a jacket, or getting out of a car. This is hardly a fitness tracker at this point.

I finally "resolved" the sports band issue by pulling the sides of the band off of the Shine 2 and using them to hold the Shine 2 against the plastic backing, which in turn connected to the band. While this has proven to be effective, it looks ugly and blocks the face of the device.

PLASTIC CLIP: The plastic clip shows as little forethought as the sports band. Misfit did away with the magnetic clasp found in the original Shine (I assume because it wouldn't have worked well with thicker fabrics) and went for a plastic clip instead. When I tested the clip, I found that it gripped some materials well (sweaters), but the plastic felt cheap and easily stretched. The clip does hold the Shine 2 well, but it doesn't hold onto thinner active fabrics (like Under Armour shirts) very well at all. It fell off of my shirt once before I moved it to my shoe. Unfortunately, I was so concerned about losing it after the issues I had with the wristband and clip on my shirt that I was afraid to actually jog with it on.

To add to the above issues, the Plastic Clip attaches to your clothes, meaning you don't get sleep tracking or tracking of movement in the early morning or late evening.

SUPPORT: Lastly, when I contacted Misfit about the issues with their Sports Band and Plastic Clip (this was over a week before the initial release), their response was sorely lacking. They did offer to send out a new Sports Band, but that hardly solves the issue when the band itself is poorly designed. I pointed out to them that any use of this device with the Sports Band would end in the user losing their Shine 2 and didn't receive a response. We'll see if Misfit begins shipping a different band in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mon premier tracker
Reviewed in France on March 6, 2016
